Let's Glitch Sonic 3 & Knuckles (Updated November 17th, 2009)

    Amazing! How do you find all these? Thought I'd seen a few you might have missed, but no, all present and correct, plus a load more. Nice :)

    No good game-testers at all for Sonic 3 & Knuckles during production! I am sure they ran out of time too. But both Tails<->Sonic link and Super Sonic can break the game too easily. Since Sonic 2 HD uses Sonic 3's moves, I have to be very cautious not to forget about these glitches. But by fixing one glitch, 20 more will be added. So it will be critical to test everyting over and over for each beta release.

    Things that I didn't know:
    Super transformation ignores solid platforms! <TERRIBLE>
    Tails dropping Sonic off a fan in Carnival Night! <OUCH>
    Sonic 3's tube spinning is not safe compared to Sonic 2's and Sonic 1's! Sonic 2 HD TD uses Sonic 3's ways and it is clearly NOT working <BAD>

    The solid collisions are heavy on the Genesis CPU and Naka saved some CPU time by not activating them when a sprite is clipped. This was done in Sonic 1, and is clearly forgotten 3 games later when Super and flying moves were introduced. That's the worst part about coding games in an assembler language and hardcoding fixes that are easily forgotten later on.

    For Sonic 2 HD, everything is OOP, and there is much easier to track down changes such as overloaded functions and derived objects. Also with so much CPU time, the solid platforms will not let the player pass. Still, having the choice of an unlimited speed boost for Sonic while running or falling, that will eventually crack the collision. It's gonna be fun to fight these glithces to the very end with your help of course!

  4. Care to explain how you came to that conclusion? Because my video player does not agree with you. It can't give me an average fps for whatever reason, but the current fps keeps changing between 58, 64, 48 and occasionaly some lower numbers.

    Also, be sure to check the low quality version. I tried the high quality one (&fmt=18) and it definitely has fewer frames per second.

    The 'Super State but not in Super' glitch was really messed up. Nice job finding these!

    Thanks for all the comments. The Marble Garden zone video should be up by this weekend. I have some schoolwork (mainly the last project I'll ever have to do) I have to do for college, so don't expect that to come out before then.

    For how I find these, it's mainly just applying the glitches in the basic techniques video in key areas.

    To date, I've only found one glitch that will actually crash the game, and it's in Sandopolis of all places. So look forward to that one. Everything from Marble Garden on should have some more interesting stuff, too.

    Now that's unexpected. I checked the HQ version of all the videos, thinking they were indeed "higher quality" than the normal ones, but apparently it's the other way around. The FLV for that one is, indeed, 57.459 fps.

    So it turns out that the LQ versions have a higher frame rate limit and the HQ ones are capped at 30? wtf?

    Back on topic: GoldS, a couple of years ago I found a glitch in Marble Garden too, which not only allows you to loopback as you did in HCZ as well, but it also let you fight against Robotnik in Act 1. Make sure to check it out.

    I don't really think this was over looked, Its just in normal situations, the character is stopped in mid air assuming nothing will come in contact with it. They figure, nothing will happen, no need to check collision....
     
  9. Weird, huh? When I noticed this I figured they lowered the frame rate to prevent higher resolution videos from becoming too large, since the average YouTube John Doe doesn't care about frame rates, just how large and sharp the image is. Frame rate is a big issue for me though.

    Back to the glitches, the movies are awesome. I sure have seen some of these bugs before, but the fact that one can go zone by zone and show so much about each one is certainly amazing! Please keep it up, I'm loving them. Since I'm working on a Sonic-like engine for the NES, seeing those bugs even helps me think about some aspects I didn't before.

    I guess it works better like that. Don't you think that having the character pushed around during their transforming animations would look terrible? Like, you are transforming and then a horizontally moving platform approaches and you are pushed to the side? That'd look terrible.

    That's plain unfair :P Sure there are bugs, but these are for most part hard to perform. I never had the feeling of playing a "bugged" game while beating it normally, and if the average player had the same feeling, that's enough for me to say testers did do a decent job.

    Probably, but there's the option to have collisions running and not to change the character position until the transformation is done.

    Needless to say the videos were very amusing. I got many times that glowing sonic on hidrocity, but never figured out the actual way of doing it, guess it wasn't that hard after all, heh. These videos are also tempting me to do some bugfixing on the actual game =P

    Probably to try to keep CPU usage down on older machines. Flash can be a bit of a hog.

    God, these are awesome. Definitely keep it up. I find them fascinating, and I'm not even into the Sonic Romhacking scene.

    Fascinating. I'm eager to see what Marble Garden will bring - especially given it has two possible bosses to fight.

    Although I didn't find "Tails is a traitor" that funny... a little amusing how it happened, but I kind of saw it coming, and I wouldn't call Sonic 3's collision detection WORKING for once to be a glitch :P

    Oh jeez. I remember the boss trick with Act 1.

    These videos are bringing back some memories. I remember after completing the games multiple times, I finally tried to essentially "break" the game in whatever way possible, to see what culd happen.

    I remember finding something really interesting in Sky Sanctuary Zone. Somehow, I recall being able to get Mecha Sonic boss fights to load up in spots that he wasn't supposed to.

    That's really getting intense! I'm loving these videos. Actually I used to unintentionally fight Sonic's boss with Knuckles back then.

    Right before you fight the final Mecha Sonic fight, use tails to fly you up to ceiling, which is the final platform's bottom. When you do that, Mecha Sonic will now spawn whenever the screen locks. You can set up double fights this way, or if you mess up he will randomly do his moves in non boss arenas, falling to his doom but is now above you ready to fall down again. Finding him is tricky. What also is cool is this way he becomes his original silver color with this glitch.

    Tails and Knuckles is a pretty awesome team. Nice video!
