Sometimes running through the levels the normal way gets a bit old. So what other ways do you like to play? Do you make any challenges for yourself or set limitations or what not? I tried something today in Generations with Modern Sonic, where I limited myself (as much as possible) to the available moveset that was in that original game.

    GHZ - Jumping, sliding
CPZ - Jumping, sliding, Super Sonic
SSZ - Jumping, sliding, Super Sonic
SHZ - Jumping, sliding, homing attack
CEZ - Jumping, sliding, homing attack, rail grinding
SSHZ - Jumping, sliding, homing attack, rail grinding
CCZ - Jumping, sliding, homing attack, rail grinding, stomp, boost (I could only boost at the end of the level to imitate the mach speed sections)
RRZ - All moves in game minus Super Sonic
PWZ - All moves in game except your limited as to when you can use certain moves (blatantly obvious drift and quick step areas for example)

Of course rail grinding is not always avoidable, but for the most part this is entirely do able. Pretty fun too. What other ways have you guys thought of playing?

I once tested City Escape to see if I could do it without Boosting or Homing. I got hit at the very end of the truck part for not boosting...other than that, was pretty fun to try out XD

Basically when I go back to one of the Classic, Adavance or Rush games now, I properly think about which route to take. Usually I find myself playing through these expansive stages in the same way each time, and it's actually very refreshing to go about them differently. Suppose that's why Shadow is more replayable then the 3D games that came before it...

So, Sonic the Hedgehog plays you, instead of the other way around? ^_~ (I'd make a joke about Soviet Russia, but I think that's way overused.)

Anyway, I tend to be pretty straightforward when I play Sonic, although if I see powerups and such, I'll almost always go out of my way to get them. If I'm particularly bored, I also stand next to the end of the stage and see if I can clear it in exactly 9:59, at least in games with the 10-minute time limit.

    I DONE MAKED GAMES.
I use my penis to play Streetfighter. Every time I hadouken my opponent is a dick move.

    </badjoke>
I often play through the entirety of Sonic 2 without spin-dash. I've opined (long ago in these parts) about my dislike of the move in general, it seriously isn't needed in S2 at all. And many parts of the game are, IMO more satisfying without (bottom route of MCZ1, lookin' right atcha).

In general my play-style of Sonic games involve trying to keep a good flow and sustain momentum, almost like a decent Mirror's Edge run but 2D Sonic. It's a fast game, why shouldn't I play as fast as I can? ;)

I hacked Sonic 1 and replaced all monitors with Eggman monitors and took out all rings. Makes for a fun challenge. I might also alter the layouts to make a challenge as well. NO I didnt add the spindash, but I did fix the speed caps, as well as a couple of small fixes (Thank you SCHG :) )

EDIT: to do... take out the air bubbles from Labyrinth Zone and get rid of those handy shortcuts.

I will give you a million quid and donate my cock to science if you can complete the whole Labyrinth without ONE air bubble (and no, you can't use debug mode). Hint: You need 1 in act 3.

EDIT: Actually, I stand corrected. Just went the long route in Labyrinth 3 without an air bubble... but I had to die in the process.

    Mind control.
    With the power....of the MIND.

Either that or with lots and lots of jumping.

So has anyone tried to not touch the 1P controller at all in S3K levels and try to fly Sonic around with Tails?

I hold the D-pad on right and jump/spindash/move left only to remove obstacles in my way, and control my air movements so as to launch Sonic as far to the right as possible.

Of course there is a difference. In classic games I change it up to best control the most useful level gimmick in my path, while in Dimps games I sort of fall asleep and let the springs and other automated garbage do all the work for me.

I was going to record myself doing this and then answer with a video "Challenge accepted", but to my displeasure, this was impossible. Some spots that they have to go through are just too tight. And the trunk in Angel Island Act 1 doesn't open up if you don't enter it with Sonic at full speed apparently. I was forced to use controller 1 multiple times, so challenge failed.

I took a leaf from the book of that one guy on the Something Awful forums who LP'ed Super Mario 64, and decided to try playing Sonic 3 with my feet. I still beat the game, but it took 2 days and I had to scrub the controller pretty thoroughly afterwards.

Now that I have a new USB controller for my PC, I think I'll give that a shot. I used to play Mario Kart Double Dash with my feet just fine, so Sonic should be a cakewalk! >:D (I will clean the controller afterwards of course, always do it every other week anyway.)

That would have been epic, although even if it were possible, I think my patience would have ground on me hard real fast trying to do that through the whole game, ouch.

A real challenge for me would be not playing as either Tails or Blaze in the 2D games, FUUUUUUUUUU. (No really, I stink as Sonic in every freaking game, even on Riders! ;_; ) It's like if I don't have a special ability, I'm just a mindless rock on wheels with no brakes.

Anyway, for some reason, speed run challenges are mostly what interest me when it comes to replaying Sonic games. Taking the fastest routes or sometimes deviating from the usual paths to look for shortcuts. (There are some places I've still never been to on Chemical Plant!) So far I can only beat Sonic 2 in 45 minutes flat, assuming I don't die on the Death Egg due to lack of rings.

When I'm not speed-running, however, I still soar like a cross-eyed hamster on Redbull through each level, carelessly taking hits by enemies every-time they troll me! =P But I will go out of my way for extra lives or shields if I see them; same for new paths I haven't traveled on before.

I lol'd in real life at that last sentence, seriously. xD Methinks that would leave scars, though, the hadouken is a real *pain to pull off!

EDIT : Blah, the one time I cursed on the Internet and I still regret it months later. ;__; *replaces word*

Playing one handed is a pretty easy thing to do- considering I can play Little Big Planet 1/2 perfect fine one handed...

I used to do this in Sonic and Knuckles zones to get emeralds frequently. They had several parts where you could fly up into the ceiling at Lava Reef and Sandopolis.

    GO ME.

So since I am not getting the 1 million, are you just donating it away or throwing it in the streets? LOL

Anyway... on a slightly more serious note, Youtube is great for "Challenges". As long as they don't involve TAS or debug mode, they are actually pretty sweet.
On this note, can we convince ColinC10 to make an expansion, or sequel to Sonic 3K Challenges??

I once played Sonic 3 & knuckles upside down. Was lieing on bed with my back against bed and looking at TV and game was upside down and tried to complete levels. Controllers were opposite, when I wanted to go right, I had to press left etc.
