The Shell gas station near where I live also makes the ring sound. I also heard it in a gas station in Wyoming when we went to buy fireworks for the 4th of july.

    Shut the fuck up. =P

Anyway, I've heard it in New York, New Jersey and Michigan. I'm positive that I've heard the score tally noise and the +1 ring sound. The ring sound is played when an item is scanned, and the score tally noise at the end of an act is played when teh cash register is opened. It's a digital noise, for sure.

    Ditto!

This is seriously the first time I've heard of this!

I live in the UK, and I've never heard that before until just now :psyduck:

Yeah, there are some stations that do this. I think the Mobil stations around here have the ring noise. I commented on it, and the cashiers had no idea what I was talking about XD

In Rockford, IL, there's a Mobil that has the same sound. I recorded it one time and did a wave comparison, they were pretty much identical, I'd say any difference would just be due to the poor recording quality - so you're not hearing things, guys. :)

Our local petrol station makes the Exclamation sound from Windows 98. I shudder every time I hear it as to what's running on their POS tills. Thank christ I only pay there in cash =P

When me and my parents were traveling to Arkansas, we stopped at a gas station. When the guy rang up my Mountian Dew, I heard a ring noise. I was like "Hey mom, that cash register just made the ring collection sound" and she said "I don't care. Go get back in the truck"

I need to go to one of these places which have a ring register and buy something.
Also, the ATM at the Woodforest National Bank which is inside the walmart I work at makes the windows 98 exclamation noise.
An ATM machine. Running Windows 98.

Or they just happen to have used the sound effects from it for an entirely unrelated reason. Either way.

This is a great way to increase sales - just make your cash register make a classic video game sound, and hoards of sorry nostalgia addicts will buy things they don't need just to hear it. =P

LOL! I have the ring noise play whenever I get IMs in Messenger, too! :D

My sign-in noise is the classic Sonic 1-up theme, however.

There's a Supermarket in my town that has the Ring SFX noise for ringing things up. Drives me a bit nuts, since I expect a one-up. =P

(And yes, its not a sort-of soundlike, its not even just close, its dead on to the Sonic Advance noise. Agreeing with a previous poster =P )

EDIT: Also to note, the supermarket here isn't part of any particular chain, its just a (fairly large) local store. =P

Dammit, all of this makes me want to go to Mobil. I think there's one somewhere around where I live. I'll have to check it out.

Forget what I said before. :v: I need to see if I have a Mobil anywhere near where I live, just so I can hear the Ring sound. *Puts on To Do list before I die* No where else seems to have that sound, which is why I didn't believe it at first.

There's a gas station here that has a register that does it. It just sounds TOO similar to be a coincidence. :v:

  19. Just to put it to rest, it is the Sonic 1/2/3K Ring noise. Its used at almost all Valeros and I'd imagine a lot of other similarly owned gas stations.

Also, if a user hits the wrong key on such a register, the "uh oh" sound from worms plays.

    That is all.

One of our Mobile's got this register system earlier this year too. I was going to post about it then, but I figured I'd get bitched at over making a stupi topic. :D
