Sonic the Hedgehog IDW Comic Megathread

Discussion in 'General Sonic Discussion' started by Dark Sonic, Jan 22, 2018.

  1. I just noticed he has sharp pointed spurs on the back of his boots. That's at least one nod to his species. As for of Duck Bill. He's probably the worst looking platypus I've seen in anything.
Especially his old design. I thought he was a donkey when I first saw him. (Didn't help that he has long ears, and was facing the front in the panel from what I remember. Bottom half was obscured as well)

Yea maybe they just saw that the new comic gave them an opportunity to make new designs closer to certain species than before. Archie ran into problems back in the day with their earlier characters since I think they were trying to design them closer to SatAM characters than Sega characters. This was especially a problem with armadillos, as the SatAM design for one of the back up freedom fighters was an armadillo that looked nothing like Mighty, and eventually Mighty came around so you were left with two completely different looking characters of the same species.

Out of curiousity what is the majority opinion on the IDW comics so far, anyways? I haven't really been keeping track.

Also @Dark Sonic: I mean, to be fair, that happens even with the official designs. Blaze and Big are two entirely different interpretations of a Cat, and in Big's case, his eyes are unlike those of any other Sonic character's. I have no idea what they were thinking when they designed Big.

  4. I have to say I agree, I had a look at this no fewer than five times.

I haven't read the previous issue but by flipping through it...

Definitely looks like a platypus to me...

It's also worth noting that the slender "bill" has precedence in Pokémon's Golduck, which people have an easier time reading as being platypus than Psyduck despite looking even less like one. It just seems that it's an animal that doesn't lend itself well to abstraction, either for its obscurity or its analogous traits with other animals.

See also Hippopo of Liquid Kids, who most people classify as a hippo based soley on his name.

See what I mean about auricles? Was it really to much trouble to consult wikipedia?

  7. Just remembered, Sonic Boom had D.B. Platypus. Who looks more like a platypus than either of those two, funnily enough. (Minus the nostrils being at the back rather than the front)

Solicitations for IDW's April 2019 products have been released.

In addition to Sonic the Hedgehog #16, they're also offering a freebie called Sonic the Hedgehog: Tangle & Whisper #0, which retailers can order in bundles of 25. It'll be a recap of "season one" of the Sonic comic, with an additional four page preview of the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog: Tangle & Whisper mini-series.

This is the first time a comic exclusive Sonic character has gotten their own comic, so it's quite unprecedented. (Princess Sally got a mini-series in 1995, but she was from the cartoon show.)

Well that's extremely soon. The characters have only been around for a year and they're getting their own mini series? Pretty cool though.

Tangle got a hugely positive reception when she was first revealed, so it makes sense to strike whilst the iron is hot, rather than leave it too long and lose momentum. Teaming her up with Whisper makes sense too, since she needs someone to interact with, and if it were a game character there's the risk she'd be overshadowed.

Part of me wishes to throw some heavy snark at this but given the sad history behind Sonic comics: Hey Penders! When's that filthy stu graphic not-vel of yours supposed to come out? Ian's characters are getting their own mini-series in a fraction of the time with none of the lawsuit.

Sure this whole situation is a fan fiction writer's wet dream but in this very specific case, all I have to say is FUCK PENDERS.

  12. I saw today that #4 is getting a reprint, with a different cover. I must say I like it:

I must admit when I heard about this my first thought was Penders, but more along a line of "welp the last time we had a spinoff from the US comic it went so well", so...

So apparently two issues were released in the shortest month of the year.

Eggman being an actual mad scientist was fun. His plan seems like a way to weave the Freedom Fighters into the mix. A new form of roboticizing feels ripe for Bunnie to come back. Amy seems to have taken Sally's role, though. Tumble's got a complex, which is nice. Good to know he won't just be a bruiser.

I've been really down on this series but the last 2 books feel like a comic should. The first 12 are a hell of an awful slog to get through, but I feel much more positive now. I'm really dig Eggman's swagger.

    15's out.

Knew Sonic would get hit Eggman's metal batter at some point, but I didn't expect it right away. I guess Rough & Tumble are getting side-lined, too. Taking bets on whether Metal Sonic gets jealous of Sonic Metal'd later on in the arc.

The annual came out last week. Picked it up today. No Tangle & Whisper at the comic store for Free Comic Day, for some reason. Ah, well.

It's a fun little collection of filler stories. Tangle and Whisper meeting up with the Babylon Rouges was good, Blaze and Silver were pretty cute, too. Gonna be great nephew bedtime fodder.

Guess not many people here read the comics. Two issues came out this month. Sonic tapping into the Speed Force to tamp down the virus feels like a bit of a cop out. Eggman being an actual menace is still great. Charmy is presumed turned, so that's potentially neat. I'm digging these raised stakes, even though it's essentially a Sonic take on a zombie story.
