Buyatari's Sonic Art Pics

Discussion in 'General Sonic Discussion' started by Buyatari, Apr 29, 2013.

  1. This same image can be found on a rare and expensive promotional Sonic #1 comic which predates the current Archie series.

A few years back I purchased a lot of 20-40 Sonic illustrations which included the one used on your birthday card. Sorry for the bad pics I've never taken the time to redo them.

Yeah, that birthday card artwork did end up in a few places (I used to have a poster of it that, I believe, came with my copy of Sonic 1 Mega Drive - it's long gone now unfortunately); I've never seen anyone else post a picture of the actual birthday card though.

That's a really nice collection of illustrations you have there! A couple of them I've never actually seen before :)

At least in Spain, it was used for a news blurb that talked about Capcom and SEGA's agreement to publish Mega Man games on their systems (which ended up being Wily Wars and Mega Man Game Gear)... So I guess it came with their press release, or something.

  4. Thanks. I've sold a few over the years but I still have most of them. There is also a big stack of sketches etc which if anyone wants to see those let me know.

Here are a couple more pictures of the Sonic paintings.

  5. No idea what this is. Rudely cut from something. Back is blank.

Here are some older pictures I took for another website Assemblergames. This particular set is for the Sonic Heroes game.

I do wish ASSembler wouldn't plaster their URL all over unique images. Watermarking sucks.

Interesting stuff Buyatari, thanks for sharing.

Yep :) Doesn't look like it's ever been opened, and I intend to keep it that way.

We don't have a general SEGA merch thread, right?

  9. Assembler didn't do that.

    I did that.

Years ago on Atariage someone swiped my posted images without asking and sold white hooded sweatshirts with the images on eBay. The sweatshirt auctions were discovered by the same person who sold me the artwork. The artist made the assumption that I was behind these eBay sales and that I was using his images to sell merchandise without his permission. It was a horrible situation and he was not happy with me about it.

Watermark protection can always be circumvented but I'm not going to make it too easy for these guys.

Meanwhile you ruin the image for everyone viewing it. Dumbass.

Hey, we're lucky enough he's sharing these. We would likely never have seen them otherwise.

We still haven't seen them. We've seen them with a big black ugly and distracting text pasted on top of it.

Also, who is this 'we?" If you feel lucky to see that vandalized image, good for you. Personally I wouldn't have given it a thought if he wasn't bragging about how he ruined artwork for everyone just to spite people who make bootleg shirts. My mind is blown.

  13. Another person was blamed for tagging my photos when he had nothing to do with it. I was stating the facts not bragging.

Sorry you disagree with me here but I happen to consider the wishes of the artist WHO GAVE THESE TO ME above those of the fans. You want to see them without tags drive up to this years CCAG and I'll bring stacks for you to see in person. Just let me know beforehand that you are coming and what you want to see.

Wait, does that mean you're not planning to release clean scans of those? =(

I released the old Sonic 2 concept art scans without watermarks so people would appreciate them in their full glory, because they serve to document a part of entertainment history, and specifically one that's more close to us Sonic fans.

Of course some people will grab the images off the internet and do stuff with them, it's human nature and it can happen with anything that gets displayed anywhere. I personally think the offenders are the ones who should be punished rather than the rest of humanity, but that might be just me.

All those sketches and original artworks are pretty interesting and proper archival of them would improve the general knowledge on how these games came to be marketed. Please do reconsider scanning and releasing them without watermarks.

I completely understand, things posted on the internet will be spread around and people will do whatever they want especially if they can earn money off of it. That being said, since he had been given images from the original artist and the artist so someone else profiting off his work, I can understand the reluctance to release the images without watermarks. I have no problem with watermarks if they don't obscure a huge portion of the image. Hopefully he can at least scan the photos for himself on the computer for archiving purposes. People will always do what they can for money, images are copied all the time and not credited to the original owner. I say let the fans see these but if he wants to withhold it's understandable, just a bad situation.

    I doubt anyone's gonna make a t-shirt of a proto Heroes box, though. =P

If you feel that way there's nothing really I can do to force you, but I'd echo Iceknight's request to please release these without a watermark at some point down the line.

  17. I'll just stick to posting pictures of items that have already been published and no one will have to get upset over this.

Here is a page from the Sonic the Hedgehog Official Stylebook & Character Manual showcasing several licensed products.

Hm... I think all the stuff Buyatari is posting deserves its own centralized topic, separate from the "merchandise" and "other knowledge" ones.

  19. I've never photographed these before so this is something new for you guys. These 4 large paintings (10inX30in) were used for the backgrounds on the MB Sonic the Hedgehog board game.
