    ---
After seeing the reactions Untitled Sonic 1 Hack got at SHC2015 (spoiler: they weren't very good) I took it upon myself to improve the hack as best I can. Hopefully it's actually fun this time around.

    FEATURES:

4 full length zones, and one two-act long zone
New level layouts, palettes, music, and art
Double jump by pressing A in the air
Jumpdash by pressing B/C in the air
    Spindash, of course
    Removed speed cap
    New monitors
    A few other miscellaneous edits

    Zones
    SHINING SHORE ZONE
The smell of fresh grass fills the air as Sonic speeds by in this bright and cheery landscape. Bounce on springs but not on spikes - ouch!

    [IMG][IMG]

    DREAM DRAIN ZONE
A swirling vortex fills the sky in this alien area, filled with some sort of... liquid. Whatever it is, it hurts!

    [IMG][IMG]

    CURSED CASINO ZONE
Once a bustling casino, this grim area has been haunted by the spirits of the dead. Spooky!

    [IMG][IMG]

    LUSTER LABYRINTH ZONE
These ancient ruins have long been protected by the lingering chaos energy. The bricks seem to give off a prismatic shimmer, and the magical water prevents you from drowning. Your double jump will be of great use here!

    [IMG][IMG]

    STERLING STREET ZONE
    ???

    ROBO REACTOR ZONE
Robotnik's base of operations. After his defeat in Scrap Brain, he took it upon himself to make his new hideout as cruel and soul-crushing as possible.

I played the first 3 acts just now and loved the aesthetics of the game, the pallete looks spot on and the sonic sprite fits well. The SEGA intro is hilarious as well btw kudos.

I think the only thing that puts me off about playing the rest of the game is the level design as far as enemy placement goes, it feels kind of trappy and breaks the flow because I'm shitting myself to go quickly (it is only the first level, kind of want to just go quickly), admittedly I was playing with the keyboard so that could be an added factor.

The Jump Dash, Honestly I feel like it should kill badniks like it where a headbutt.

Thanks, a lot of people have complimented the palettes so far. I guess that's something right :v:

The enemy placement, yeah I'll agree on that. SSZ was one of my earlier zones and I'll be playing it and think "how tf am I supposed to see that". I'll work on it. Thanks for the feedback!

In Cursed Casino act 3 the song stops playing after about 2 minutes for some strange reason and Sonic can't drown. Also why did you change the name back to Untitled Sonic 1 hack I really like the Sonic 1 Reimagined title. But anyways great job.

I forgot to attatch my video, I recorded my first experience with it, apart from me playing like shit, i think it highlights what I mean about the jump dash and enemy placement.

What's wrong with the sound? Are you playing it on a ATGames console?

...do you even know what an AtGames system sounds like?

That's fairly obviously a shit microphone.

What's the Music on the first act? I'm ashamed I cannot remember. Other than that I really like the aesthetic and map layouts! The "Homing attack" is really cool too.

Edit: You should put a song list if it's not too inconvenient cause a lot of these will drive me crazy if I don't find out where they're from.

It's visually stunning for a hack but my only complaints are the music. Majority of them are really bad choices but hey that's just my opinion, I'm pretty sure someone else will like it more than me

How so? I found them to fit relatively well (except for maybe Windmill Hut in DDZ1)

Kega 3.64, The source video sounds nothing like that youtube video, I dunno what happened, I threw it in at 480p and it came out a garbled 240p mess, It looked fine before it processed.

I personally loved the music choices for the hack, I felt like they matched the mood of each level well enough. Also the Jeopardy music in mini game was great.

And I agree great palettes. Nice difficult stages.

  15. I found this one to fit especially well! As for the hack as a whole, the layouts are very well done, except for Cursed Casino 1 just after the first checkpoint (Bumpers galore + Incorrect collision) and one of the other Cursed Casino acts at the very start (Almost unreachable platform-thingies made out of the moving Object 56s).
Music, absolutely stunning choices and ports, especially Robo Reactor 1, Dream Drain 1, Invinciblity (first ever Sonic Mania port used in a hack!), Cursed Casino 1, Final Boss, Song $84 (presumably Sterling Street 1) and Cursed Casino 3, though I did notice that you used some songs from SSRG's SMPS Competition (Thought you could fool the host/mod of it, did you =P).
Art, is really good, especially Radiant Ruins and Robo Reactor! I know that most of the art is ported but it really does look amazing. One more thing, I love the rolling sprite in place of the spindash sprite because it just works and works well!

This is a really amazing Sonic hack. I loved this game's aesthetics, along some of the new icon graphics lifted from Mania that actually fit extremely well. While some of the music choices could be changed, I actually liked most of the songs in the two zones I played. Overall, it's a great hack. It's really nice when you see people imporve. I can't wait to see what you make next!

I really enjoyed this hack. The palettes and music didn't seem like they were unfitting to me, and aside from one bug (If you're facing left after you jump on the capsule at the end of Radiant Ruins Act 3, Sonic will autorun to the left, going back into the boss arena, and since you can't drown, the game soft-locks there.), was a good experience all around.

Also the Jeopardy theme for the special stage? That made me chuckle.

    • Tons of minor aesthetic changes
    • Redone title and level select screens
    • Level layout tweaks
    • Redone palettes for Shining Shore Zone and Luster Labyrinth Zone (formerly Radiant Ruins zone)
    • Finished 2nd special stage
    • Finished Robo Reactor Zone act 2
    • New anti-repro cart splash screen, courtesy of Bakayote
    • New act clear and extra life music, courtesy of A-S-H

Also updated the OP with new screenshots.

  19. Hey, here's that video I promised on Discord earlier. Sorry the audio is so quiet, but for some reason that's the highest it would go even after manipulation. At first, it was almost completely inaudible. Thanks, iPhone 4 :v:/>

For some reason, only drums and jump sound effects persist after any boss' music, 90% of the time. Very rarely, the boss audio will become regular again and the audio will be fine afterwards, but it's only happened once.

Let me also take this post to say how much improvement this hack has seen from last year's SHC build. It looks, plays, and sounds so much better than it did a year ago. I considerably enjoy the music choices, and I'm liking the art, too, especially what you've done with Labyrinth and Scrap Brain Zone. I'm looking forward to the final level/boss (And maybe some reworked bosses in the future? :rolleyes:/> )!

EDIT: Also, you might want to double check the mappings for the water slide animation.
