What if, to compete with Nintendo's F-Zero, Star Fox, and Super Mario Kart franchises, SEGA released a Mode 7 Sonic racing game for the Genesis or SEGA CD?

Does anyone else feel like this had/has potential to be something fun? It would control like Sonic CD's special stages, maybe even stealing the UFO idea to give you power-ups and items like speed-up and such, etc. This literally just came to my head right now, and I think it would have been a fun game, maybe even a fun fan game if someone wanted to do so. Would this have been a good idea, or should these 3D modes simply stayed in the special stages and such?

I mean, sure, it could have worked, but you're basically just saying make Sonic R on a previous console. And I honestly feel like the Sonic CD special stage controls horribly... not that Sonic R didn't.

Sonic R controls much better than the Sonic CD special stages. More specifically, the main problem with the special stages in Sonic CD is that you turned too slow, making it a pain to get anywhere, really.

Well, that and you more or less can't decelerate for beans.

I would have to say no, because in order to get the mode7 effect, it would have been on the Sega CD.

I'd rather something like a Super Mario Kart mod using All Stars Racing characters or Drift characters. :colbert:

Getting any decent performance of a Mode 7-like game engine on the Mega Drive (even counting the Sega CD) while allowing for things such as split screen would have required an incredibly good on-cart CPU onboard.

I could see a plausible single player going on, however.

That's because it's a Special Stage though =P For some game I was working on some years ago I had implemented similar bonus stages, that controlled exactly the same and even had much harder traps - but you would be running slower there, so you had perfect control over the character.

Press down. I don't know if it's in the original but you can do it in Taxman's CD.

    Can't.

This is news to me. Would make playing those a helluva lot easier, potentially.

Don't have Sonic CD here right now, but yes, I think you could press down to decelerate. Didn't notice this until quite late though, which made the special stages a bitch for me >_>

Mode 7 done right is an amazing thing to see. The only real downside to it being used for a Sonic racing game, would be that more than likely, SEGA would just make it a fucking kart/car racing game.
They did it with Sonic Drift, they did it again with Sega & Sonic Racers. It wouldn't be too hard to imagine Sega trying a similar thing for the Mega Drive if they had the technology to do a true Mode 7 style racer.

Although a retro-esque Sonic R would be something of interest to see, personally I think that would've made things different enough to keep the ideas and the races fresh enough to not look like a desperate attempt to copy a winning formula.

Thank god Sega never tried with any other genres that Nintendo had been succeeding with-

There's also things like BC Racers for the Mega CD

I don't think the SNES can do anything as complex as this, but I don't know its library all that well. There might be one or two games out there that manage, though I would expect sharp drops in framerates or Doom-like pixelation.

I've never really been convinced these sorts of racers work though. They looked great in the early 1990s but as soon as "real" 3D became involved they started to age quite badly. I was going to say Street Racer was the exception but then I noticed that there's 3D geometry involved. People just accept that it's okay for a completely flat surface to act as a wall, whereas I think it's really quite silly and doesn't make a huge amount of sense. Having a Sonic game based around this concept is even worse - in Sonic games, you expect to be able to jump, and unless you were going to have DEADLY WATER I can't see how it would work without proper walls. The Sonic CD special stages are about as far as you could go, I think.

I actually don't think Sonic racing games work full stop. They have to put the characters in cars, else you get a situation like Sonic R where the computer will always make Super Sonic win.
