You guys might already have seen this, but just in case:

I just found out about this. It's an old archive of Sonic and other SEGA footage from British TV dating back to 1992-93. It's 2 hours long so I've not yet had time to go though it properly to see if there's anything noteworthy or unusual in there. It looks really interesting though.

Even if there's no beta footage or anything, it's still a nice bit of nostalgia for the Brits on here ;)

Here's the original article about it: http://sega-memories...video-ever.html

Yes, there is some beta footage in the video. I will point them out and make comparisons:

The footage starts at 11:45, and near the end of act 1, you will notice some differences. Near the start, the shield monitor's missing, and at the end of the act, there's no score tally. Although there's no score tally in the SW proto, if you notice, the Coconuts badnik is in the level, which doesn't exist in the SW proto (in place is that slug badnik), but exists in Beta 4. At the end of act 2, just like in the SW proto, Robotnik's vehicle is already there, while in Beta 4, it works like the final. In CPZ, the loops are octogonal, like in the SW proto and unlike Beta 4. Sonic uses his final sprites and there isn't a boss in CPZ, just a signpost. There's a Sol (Orbinaut) near the start of HTZ rather than those hermit crabs, unlike in Beta 4 and even the SW proto, where there's no badniks.

In short, it's a revision between the Simon Wai proto and Beta 4, in other words, the lost Beta 3. (Thanks to SuperEgg for assistance in analysing this.)

Quick question, one that I haven't really thought about before. Why are there so many betas still around for Sonic 2? People on this forum have dug around for other game betas but we end up finding a lot of Sonic 2 ones ? People held onto them more then others for what? Bad security around that time?

Confused...

First time I've heard badniks referred to as "things" or "men".

DRX is what happened, look up his old topics and you'll find the release megathread for those betas.

I remember drx also saying that he stopped looking for Sonic 2 betas because tons of people were trying to sell them to him or something.

To be fair, unless we get a genuine Sonic 2 prototype older than any of the ones publicly available, there's nothing really left to look into for Sonic 2. We already know so much about it, if not everything there is to know. Sonic 3 is a more exciting premise but for none of the reasons as Sonic 2, and Sonic 1 would be the most interesting to see, but also really hard to track down without someone either sitting on it (foolishly, as dumping it will not make it any less valuable... the absurd prices of some cartridge games despite many being dumped and emulated online is enough proof of that) or wants to gouge the fuck out of the buyer.

Bit rot will not only kill the existing data but make the proto cart about as useful as a crushed soda can.

Honestly, I'd be more interested in snagging at SA1 proto with the original Windy Valley: The Air or SA2 proto as seen in the very first trailer.

Good chunks of that footage are from that VHS from Mean Machines Sega. The one S2Beta documented years ago

mind you it wouldn't surprise me if Chris Evans has a Sonic 2 prototype amongst his collection of Ferraris and that Dunlop bridge

Yeah I was emailed this just yesterday and spent ages summarizing what's in it, as it is a bit of a mess with adverts repeating over and over and a bunch of non Sega stuff too (Mr. Blobby aaaaahhhhh).

Highlights for me are the ITV news report on the Sonic 2 launch, a commercial for the Sonic Burger king toys (which I have never seen online before), the short clip of Bad Influence that has costumes of Sonic, Sparkster, Cool Spot and a Lemming. There are some other rare commercials from the Pirate TV campaign (including a Sugar Puffs Master System promotion) and one for the Telstar game double packs.

As far as I know there is nothing beta wise in there that wasn't already known about. At one point the Big Breakfast show has a beta version of Sonic Spinball, as it plays unused music when Sonic escapes the robot dragon's mouth.

Also Sega advertising at it's best:

Man, there's even articles about our ripoff game prices as early as Twosday. =P

Neat video to see, though! CPZ still seems rather buggy at this point.
