I guess I'm the only one here still thinking this is legit.
Let's go through this piece by piece, then (yes, I thought it was at least a possibility it was real for a time, but now it most certainly is not)..
* Sonic's sprites; while the standing sprite is somewhat right, as people have pointed out the head isn't far forward enough, and it isn't a part of some waiting animation as he's stood around for long enough in these videos to show it. Plus,
every other sprite in this is actually from Sonic CD. The walking frames don't have the movement and bounce that Sonic 1's did, but the staticness that Sonic CD's does. Plus, the face is different in the standing sprite compared to all the others which is stock Sonic 1/CD.
* In the prototype screenshots, the grass has been literally rotated for the slopes. In the videos, and in Sonic 1 in general, the grass just falls straight downwards, even on the slopes.
* The clouds, as have been pointed out many a time, are from the Special Stage. While this isn't necessarily "proof", as they could be older clouds they just wanted to still use somewhere, it is still somewhat suspicious.
* That sign, that we only NOW see, has inconsistencies that have already been pointed out; the lettering, the arrow, the picture, etc. I also remember seeing a sign design just like this on this very board somewhere, and I'm still trying to find it.
* The jump 'physics' look completely wrong, yet the rolling and everything else seems fine (to me). Seems like a weird thing to have wrong, and especially when it looks like an older iteration of Sonic Worlds. :P
* Graphical inconsistencies with the background positioning compared to actual screenshots, curves and highlights and stuff in the wrong places, they've already all been pointed out.
* The title screen is "final" here, just with the background removed. As an image just a few posts back shows, the actual prototype's title screen had positioning and size changes, not to mention the missing blue from the inner ring under the banner.
* The "hidden" credits thing. Stealth gave a complete and concise post about it a few up, so there's nothing more to say on that. Read it. :U
* The fade; while it could be that they originally faded to grey and then it was made to do a colour at a time so it looks to blue after, it is highly unlikely. A lot of other Mega Drive games fade out the same way, and it was probably just stock example code.
.. and I'm sure I've forgotten other things too.
Also, to counter the "this could be another prototype" thing, there is only one prototype this early that could've possibly be stolen/retrieved/whatever, and that's the Tokyo Games Show one that the prototype screenshots are from, and has been reported as missing. I sincerely doubt anything else would've been made in a releasable, cartridge, showoff-able form that early on in development.
So.. yeah. It's a fake. :U

Not to get philosophical/off-topic, but when people fuck with you irl it's usually for money, sex, drugs, favors, etc., not just for the purpose of fucking with you.
We've had many a 'prototype' like this show up back in the day, "just for the purpose of fucking with" people. It just hasn't happened in a good while. Granted, the graphics and hacking/recreation possible now to the average user is a lot more than then, but it was still done.
