I'd like some feedback on those of you specifically saying that none of the rings look good. The general opinion I'm getting from you guys is similar to what Chimpo just elaborated on -- that the rings clash with the artwork and more creative liberties should be taken with them. Ok, got it. That's what Vincent and I would like to push for. The official artwork and commercials have been used as a foundation to that extent I believe. My point is, if you guys are looking to have the rings shaded as a more golden, more metallic look, can you explain how this process wouldn't clash with the current cartoon style we've developed thus far? I'm genuinely curious how something shaded more realistically is fitting in in your views. Please correct my interpretation if it's not spot on, and add any details you see fit.

I guess people are looking for colour/metallic characteristics like these rings?

I mean sure, these look nothing in shape like the Sonic rings, but part of the issue seems to be colour and metal issues.

Those are the shapes of #4 and #5, albeit a little thinner.
I'd also like to see what people thought of vectoring over the 3D rendered rings?

If anything, I'm looking for the opposite--think closer to the representation of rings in each of the animated series.

That still looks more like a gold ring than the five hunks of plastic being debated.

I personally don't like the overly shiny, but this shape looks good. I could go for vectorized versions once we pick the BEST shitty plastic shaded rings.
To the people talking about playable demos: The programming side is working independently of the art from what I understand. I'm sure we'll see another tech demo when it looks like some of the other related art to EHZ is completed (there's still a bunch of stuff open in the database for those of you who want to jump on it).

GOD DAMMIT...Rings, Original pixel fags, Creative pixel fags... more rings... Im going crazy, right now.
Everybody know what this project was focused to. We try to do Sonic 2 in High Definition, that means... Do not replicate EVERY art pixels...but however we cannot change rings to coins for example...
Add details, but at the same time, keep the original art style... soooooooooooooooooooooo... I think, that the Rings should be hand-draw in vector style.
Guys, look at my example, Chaos emeralds...I draw 2 sets of emeralds... one set is MY own version of what they should have been... and the other set, is chaos emeralds like the original ones, with the same glows and all that shit.... why?... because some people like to reproduct all every pixel...but other people like new generation glows, shines and some things like that...
Lets say, post-processing... I think that for SOME zones we can add some glow like bloom for some objects... lets say, the sky in HTZ... It would look awesome with bloom on the sky. Why?... Who knows, people like effects. We are not in 92 guys, we should add S2HD what people want, and when Im saying people, its not just "Sonic freaks that love all old games like they were sacred" ... Sonic 2 HD should be an awesome experience to every guy out there.

Wow!
It's great to come back from such a great vacation and find 17 pages to browse! :D
Jokes apart, thanks to every single opinion expressed.
I'll read and value all of them before doing a final decision on which one gets "Approved" then moved onto db (and if it'll require major additional fixes).
Everyone wanting to try remastering it in Vector Art (which is always a plus), be prepared to take on the attempt immediately after a shape gets in "Officially Approved".
Laters ^^

Can we see what the two different shapes look like in a normal resolution like you would see it in game?

Seventeen pages? I only see six.
Six only in this topic. You forgot the rest of the Sonic 2 HD Subforum =P.

First of all thanks to both TYR and Gambit.
The work and efforts you've pulled trough do earn you respect and speaks for your skills, which S2HD Staff takes into consideration for the present and future contributions you'll produce for the game.
Seeing all the comments, comparing the Artworks, the S1 frames, our and your preferences, it is obvious that there is alot of room for improvement on the art itself and If there would be a way to please most of the users, I'd suggest a further test on shape version in between S1 Special Stage rings and #3.
However at the moment we've reached the wanted HD base quality, therefore Ring #3 is the first one that will make its step on S2HD Database.
Tyr in now invited to privately provide me or CK, the Source file of #3, as it gets "Officially Accepted" to be uploaded on the Db, not as "Final" but as "Approved Art". You and Gambit are free to continue refine you versions to beat them again in quality, but do keep in mind my suggestion above and check the poll results as your own reference to improve.
Thanks again! ^^
