Huh, I suppose it's another one of those cases of SEGA "lowering production costs".
Though I wonder how they came to the thought of relabeling NTSC-U copies of Sonic 1.

Shun Nakamura, seemingly inspired by Ohshima tweeting old Sonic sketches, just tweeted what appears to be some Sonic 2006 concept art or storyboard:

Naoto Oshima just posted some new and really interesting concept art!

Posted Image

Posted Image

These next two concept art illustrations he says was an idea that ended up becoming scrapped and unused in the end. It looks like possible Special Stage ideas and I think it might have been Sonic CD related but I am unsure. The reason I say that is because one of the Sonic sketches matches some of the unused sprites found in Sonic CD.

Posted Image

Posted Image

In the very first illustration on the upper left hand side there is a drawing of Sonic showing him from behind and it looks very similar to these unused sprites found in Sonic CD.

Posted Image

Posted Image

The drawing of Sonic not only looks similar to these unused sprites but also similar to a familiar pose in the Sonic CD opening animation.

Posted Image

Posted Image

Posted Image

In the first illustration on the bottom right there is a drawing of Sonic jumping off of a ledge and it looks similar to this unused sprite found in Sonic CD. Not one hundred percent identical, but similar.

Posted Image

Then there's this bizarre and freaky but hilarious drawing. He says he has no idea what purpose for drawing this was lol.

Posted Image

This illustration he said he drew on the corner of the enemy design page and thinks it may have been the base for the final box art cover illustration. You know the one. The iconic Sonic pose.

Posted Image

Posted Image

For this illustration he said the following - "ソニック開発をしながらチラシのデザインイメージを考えていました。
その時のラフデザインの1案。
生意気でクールにしたかった。
コピーなど全て私の仮イメージです。"

"While thinking about Sonic development, I was thinking about the design image of flyers.
One plan of rough design at that time.
I wanted to make it cheeky and cool.
Copy etc. It is all my temporary image."

Posted Image

EDIT: Naoto Oshima just posted this new illustration on his Twitter.

Posted Image

"スーパーソニックを落書きした。ソニックアドベンチャーを制作中に。"

"I graffiti a Super Sonic. At the time of Sonic Adventure."

Sega Freaks

We actually live in a world where I don't know if that "Vol. 119" in the bottom right means the 119th volume of Harmony, or the 119th Sega Freaks card.

I suspect it might actually be the former.

Sega Retro, everybody.

Naoto Ohshima just tweeted an animation cel of the Sonic CD opening:

また、懐かしいのが出た。ディレクターの特権で数枚を頂きました。
残りは営業がプレゼントして、余ったものはソニックチームに箱で残したはず。

Also, I found nostalgic. I got several copies at the privilege of the director.
The rest gave gifts, and the surplus items should have been left in the box to the Sonic team.

I hope someone's storing this stuff on the wiki ;)/>

Slightly related but there are tons of AoStH animation cells on eBay. I feel like these should be getting preserved on Sonic Retro too... even though there could have been hundreds of thousands created over the years.

I just want to say thank you very much for posting a better quality photo of the cards! It really does mean a lot to me. Now I can actually make out what's going on in the background lol and can see the details much better. I do wish we can get a high quality scan of the card though.

They have defiled Classic Sonic in the name of T-Shirts.

The style used for the metres in the upper right corner really reminds me of the Blue Sphere HUD, some digits look identical. Not to mention that it's unusual for a Sonic HUD to be in the upper right corner. It might just be a coincidence, given that the sprites are closer to Sonic CD, but still...

Actually, save for the Sonic 1 shirt, these are all chibi modern versions. They all have colored eyes and Amy has her modern outfit. The Sonic 1 shirt has black eyes.

EDIT: Also Sonic CD animation related. I followed Oshima's comment about Toshushi Eguchi and found https://twitter.com/...374874213462016 pretty much the coolest Sonic artist I have ever seen:

Those damn eyes, you're right! I didn't see that on my phone.

Some not-so-great magazine "scans" have turned up in the last 24 hours. Here's some prototype Sonic 2:

http://download.aban...20page%2014.jpg
(Supersonic, November 1992)

The article is not remotely interesting but those screenshots are really strange. The player has 56 lives by the time he/she reaches Oil Ocean Zone, and five screenshots from completely different levels have the ring counter set at 99.

Nobody is that good at Sonic 2.
