Sonic the Hedgehog's Way Past Cool Panel
Thursday, July 19 • 2:00pm - 3:00pm

Sonic The Hedgehog has raced back into comics, bringing old enemies and new friends along for the ride. IDW editors Joe Hughes and David Mariotte, artist Evan Stanley, Sega licensing specialist Michael Cisneros, director of product development Austin Keys, and head of Sonic Team Takashi Iizuka discuss comics and upcoming games, make some surprise announcements, and more!

Credit goes to Yeow for alerting us to this in the Mania Plus thread and also SuperSnoopy for suggesting we have a dedicated thread.

So SXSW is a distant memory now but it had Iizuka there with some awesome announcements like Mania Plus, Adventures and the Sonic Racing game tease. By the looks of it the same thing is happening again (the promises they're making here are similar to last time) but at a potentially even bigger event/venue with Comic-Con. Worth noting that Comic-Con is also more important/larger than SXSW so this might even be more substantial than the last panel. Both "upcoming games" and "surprise announcements" are promised so we may get a look at the next game - whatever that may be. Hoping that Mania 2 or something Mania-related is announced. Given quite a few months have passed it's way more likely now we'll see what Sonic Team and/or Team Mania are working on next.

So it's a super interesting event that we should all keep an eye on. Wanted to give everyone a heads up so have done so here. Hopes everyone?

Back from the Mania thread, here I am :v:/>

Like everyone here, I'd love a Mania 2 but I don't think they'll announce it here: Sonic Mania Plus will only be out for 3 days when the panel will take place(is this grammatically correct? English is difficult :(/> ) , and a lot of people working on Mania announced they were looking for work on Twitter. I really hope Mania is not a one and done kinda deal, but this is Sega we're talking about, so who know ?

As for the next 3d Sonic game : we know it exist (I think Sega said Sonic Team was working on a Sonic game a while ago), so now would be a good time to announce it.
Gameplay wise, I'd love for them to go back to the adventure formula, but it's been 12 years now so I think I should come to term with the fact that the boost style is the norm now. Oh well..

What I'd really like for them to improve is the communication around the game : Forces had so little gameplay showed and it was just sad, I think they revealed only like 4 stages before the game released. Of course, Generation revealed all of its main stages in trailers and that sucked too, but I think we can find a middle ground here. A middle ground that doesn't make us wait four months before the game even has a title.

It also seem like they're on a roll with merchandising lately, I wonder if they're gonna show any new collab or cool goodies.

In any case, I'm looking forward to it! It's not even that far away, which is great.

It might just be Team Sonic Racer, but it would be great if Team Mania were working on a new 2D project.

Great comments dude (everything you said) and glad to see you in here. You're pretty much the reason this thread even exists! Made it because of your post.

Yeah more on the racing game is pretty much definite - maybe even the focus - given it's their big Holiday 2018 game - but upcoming games as plural in tandem with "surprise announcements" heavily implies they have something entirely new to show off. Hoping we get a glimpse of it. I'd even take just confirmation they're going to be working with Team Mania again without them even showing the game.

There were two major Mania announcements at the last panel meaning Sega are acutely aware of Mania's super success so I'm optimistic and hopeful for this next one.

The surprise announcement will be the availability of a Sonic frying pan. I'll assume the worst until proven otherwise. However, they need to continue to energize the brand. Maybe something completely out of left field: a Sonic Spinball/Sonic Pinball Party 2?

I know you're joking but given this is Sega/Sonic Team we're talking about Forces 2 is actually a realistic possibility - however much of a disaster it would be. That said Sonic tends to be reinvented with every game and that has remained so for years now so odds are we'll probably get something new/different in terms of a new Sonic Team produced 3D game - as Sonic Team try to reinvent the wheel for the millionth time. My ultimate hope is that because Mania has eclipsed Forces in sales/revenue (based on the limited data we have Forces/Mania both cleared a million - but Mania was at the much lower price point and will get a sales boost from Plus) that should theoretically send a strong enough signal to Sega that everyone still wants more Mania and not more God-please-save-us Forces.

I'm optimistic because at SXSW it did genuinely seem like Sega had their finger on the pulse what with all the rapid-fire Mania announcements. So hope that mindset continues. We'll see soon.

No,no, no. Sonic Forces Plus, with an Encore Mode that takes place after Mania Plus, so they can release Sonic Mania Plus Plus, etc. :v:

^ yup, these will be the only 2 Sonic games now and forever.

Sega hasn't done a true Sonic sequel since SA2 (ok Sonic 4 but.... yea). I doubt we'll see a Forces 2.

Since it's a bit early to announce Mania 2 or the next Sonic Team game, they could always capitalise on Mania's success by releasing a Sonic 1/2/CD collection.

I mean please SEGA? I'm not even asking for S3K at this point, just don't leave the best versions of two of the greatest games ever to die on mobile phones.

Gotta say, I approve of the name.

Realistically though, they aren't gonna announce anything. I mean, come one. They've announced their racing game which is the Sonic game for the year. Mania plus will be out soon meaning everyone will be too busy playing it to get hyped for any announcement (unless its Shadow the Hedgehog 2 cause that would be so fucking out of left field). I don't foresee anything on the Sonic movie game (assuming it exists) or even details on the movie. It's comic con so maybe a comic announcement?

Still, porting Sonic 1 & 2 mobile remakes to Steam/PS4/Switch would be a nice announcement.

Make it physical and I'm onboard. You could even throw in Sonic 4 =P

Since the panel mainly has IDW folks, it's probably best to expect that this will mainly be about the comics with maybe a bit about Team Sonic Racing or something.

Where did you hear that, if you don't mind me asking? I'm usually pretty good about catching those kind of rumors but I personally haven't heard a peep about any Sonic 3D platformer being in development. And to be honest, I've suspected (based on things they said in media inteviews) for a few years that Sonic Team probably has some fully 3D concept in their back pocket that they want to try but is not fully fleshed out yet, so if they announce a new game or new style sometime over the next year it wouldn't shock me.

I swear, being a Sonic fan for me is like the end of the film Carlito's Way. I'm trying to escape from this miserable existence of not having a true 3D successor to the classic games...and yet I keep getting sucked by in by every glitter of hope that surrounds possible announcements. Just let me live!!! For crying out loud, I've accepted Sonic's Zombie-like transformation into this Modern disaster that I can't have much fun with. I've come to terms with it. Y U KEEP BRING ME BACK SEGA?!....

(I kid ;) )

I have learned my lesson though. I will get my hopes up when SEGA actually shows something interesting (i.e., NOT a Sonic Forces 2. I'd skip that like the first one).
Mania Plus will be good fun and when I'm done with it I'll go back to playing Borderlands and wait for BL3.

To be honest, I really could not care less about this upcoming racing game. Its not what I play Sonic for. I like actual racing games, so it does nothing for me. I sincerely hope you all have fun with it, but me, I can't be bothered to play that just like I can't play a Sonic RPG or Sonic fighting game. Sonic the platformer, is what I patron for.

Yeah the name they're going with here is awesome in a retro nineties kind of way. Like something straight out of the Megadrive-era. And yeah comic news being prevalent is most likely given who's on the panel and this being Comic Con. However name-checking video games in the promo and Iizuka's presence makes me think that there will be some kind of video game news. Perhaps not anything wow-worthy but probably something at the very least. I mean last time at SXSW my thread here on Retro on that had similar speculation at the time, that nothing exciting would be announced - and then Mania Plus and Mania Adventures came out of nowhere and everyone was pleasantly surprised. So hopefully something similar will happen again.

Also the Sonic film just started production so I'd say news on that, particularly in terms of casting confirmation, is likely to be there given Comic Con is notable as an event to announce film news. I wouldn't put it past them to announce a video game tie-in for the film or something like that.

I'm honestly hoping for something Mania-related, even if a sequel may be a long shot given it's way too early. But one can dream.
