I couldn't find the previous Sonic CD thread so if it's a problem, feel free to trash or merge.

I haven't checked yet but if I get ads come up does this mean I have to pay for a feature that I already payed for?

When the game boots up you get asked for your age.

EDIT: Taxman says that this nothing to do with him. Just found an article about. Turns out you have to pay again.

Well that sucks a lot. I hope SEGA get the criticism they deserve for this. By all means create a free version with removable ads, but don't add it as an "update" for people who have already paid for the game, forcing them to pay again.

EDIT: It's a bug apparently. Well, that's a little bit better then, but definitely something that should have been tested before hand.

At the bottom of the article it says that SEGA are aware of this but haven't commented further.

It's so confusing! In Sonic Runners they removed the ads because they weren't suitable for US players under 13. Then the game died shortly afterwards (presumably because without the ads it wasn't making much money). And now they've added ads to Sonic CD. I gather Sonic CD has an age checker, but why couldn't they do that for Sonic Runners?

Ruby has said on Twitter that if you bought the game before, you shouldn't be seeing ads: https://twitter.com/RubyEclipse/status/791533467146162176

So it seems like they'll make it ad-free for people who already paid.

Runners ads were also the root of the games poor performance (in part, at least). Constantly downloading the ads resulted in a poor frame rates and even when it was performing fine viewing an ad would very often lead to a crash or inability to continue one way or another. Plus it wasn't doing well for SEGA even with the ads running. The game didn't have a huge userbase, so ads or no it wasn't making much money. Personally, I think they were deciding to kill it off by the time they got rid of the ads.

So the game I paid for [for] now has ads, and won't run at all unless I'm online?

    Thanks SEGA, good job.

While I've had no video ads yet I have had this

Another interesting to note was this, which I did do

For the record I am glad it's being sorted. Just felt a bit peeved.

  10. Well, at least they're working on fixing it for paid users. I wonder if the Sonic 1 and 2 remakes are going to get the same treatment and be made free as well. I haven't bought any of these before, since I already have the original games and didn't think it justified paying for it again. (To be more accurate, I have Sonic Mega Collection, Sonic Gems Collection, and the original PC release of CD. I was a Nintendo kid growing up, and never had a Genesis. Wanted one, though.) I don't mind ads too much, so a free version that's portable would be nice to have for the couple hours I have between classes.

Apparently it's been fixed. Haven't got around to looking at it yet.

I don't think freemium is that big of an overhaul

Interestingly, on this latest version, it looks like they forgot to remove the Desert Dazzle Zone files again. Final Fever isn't there though.
