Yes, I realize the comics and shows aren't canon, and I don't even read/watch them anyway, but something I found weird
Ok, I just found out that the Sonic 1 stages appeared in the Sonic X comic issues 10 and 11, so I checked them out online (I've never read ANY sonic comics before), and halfway through issue 11, Eggman says that he is using his grandfathers machines (referring to the bosses of Sonic 1), but wasn't his grandfather Gerald? Not the original Robotnik.
I always though Sonic X Eggman was based on the Game Eggman, who IS the original Robotnik...
I didn't realize they changed it so much.

No. Sonic X is a totally different/retarded canon in the Sonic storyline and trying to marry it in any way to the classic timeline just doesn't work.

No, Eggman USED his grandfathers machines. His OLD machines. What they are implying is that the Sonic 1 Eggpod was Geralds but Robotnik took it and used it.
The comics aren't canon though, so they can say this and get away with it- it wouldn't even affect canon if it was true.

I'm going to have to agree with Lobotomy. Even in
Sonic X, Professor Gerald was established as Robotnik's grandfather. However, in the English dub, I remember him (erroneously) saying something along the lines of "I'm not worried about Shadow. He was designed to be the ultimate creature, created by my grandfather, Dr. Robotnik".
