Why exactly can't Sonic swim?

Speed and water never work together. :v:

 

Sonic can't swim cause he fears water, and he fears water cause he can't swim.

 

He flunked swim class.

 

They seem to work fine to me. :P

Why, if Sonic can cut through walls, floors etc. can't he cut through water quickly too? Another thing is, why not use those unique abilities as a form of swimming; why not create a vertical spindash to create a vortex to bring him back to the surface?

I guess Moonshadow Caz has a point that it is simply how the character was designed, and every superhero needs a weakness, right? But still, I bet he could cut through the water like a torpedo if the superhero-weakness rule was not applied.

 

Sonics shoes are too aerodynamically designed to allow him to swim, they basically slice through the water. His arms are too weak to assist in swimming.

 

Interestingly enough, I had my hedgehog swim for the first time yesterday. Despite how fat he is, he did pretty darn well. Sonic has no excuse!

 

I would just like to add that hedgehogs actually float. So it is implausible that a hedgehog would be able to run around underwater to begin with.

In addition to why Sonic can't swim; how come Sonic can't breathe in water, yet, CAN breathe in space?

Logical answer: It's a videogame.

I think it's because Sonic just never learned how to swim. See Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games - in all the aquatic events, Sonic is the only character wearing a life vest to stay afloat.

 

Cause he eats too much chili dogs. =(

He can in Sonic Rush and Sonic 4.

 

This pretty much says it all to me.

Sonic's aerodynamic "as can be", which means he has as little air resistance as possible.
This could also mean that he doesn't have enough resistance in the water to be able to lift himself up like we do when swimming. He doesn't have as much friction in it as we do.

 

It's officially stated that he's hydrophobic, most likely panicking when it comes to water.

...I'd also be hydrophobic if I had to go through LZ though, that level is traumatic if you play for the first time.
