I like it now! Maybe you could compromise the proportions for the original ingame sprite, just a bit? (not talking about the outer black shell)
Because if you think about it, the proportions are nothing like the sprite.

I actually kind of liked the tallness (the idea of it being a circle closed). But heh, you can't possibly please everyone! In the end I guess it's up to you and the staff.

Now that I think about it though, it'll probably balance out really nicely like that when the propeller is added on top.

QUOTE (McGuirk @ Mar 24 2010, 09:42 PM)
I'm willing to try. I'm no artist, and my free time is limited, so I'm a bad candidate for the job. However, I think I could work some magic on the little guy.

Couple Questions:

1 - The art is considerably different from the sprite. I should focus on the art's design, but make it more similar in proportions to the original sprite, correct? (Note that in the art, the crab claw legs are much longer and more horizontal, and the drill on its head is sectioned in the sprite, but more helix-like akin to an actual drill in the art)

2 - Do the Spiker and Ghora use the same orb for a body, or are they different?

3 - Do I need to make a second version with different shading for the ones on the ceiling?

1 - I'd base it off the sprite and the artwork. By that I mean look at both and pick out things you like about each and try to incorporate those things into your work.

2) They do share the same orb body.

3) I don't think that'll be necessary.

It currently looks like the guy's a bit too big to fit inside. How about making the bottom part bigger?

If you keep the yellow parts the same size, they'll still close properly.

A mockup on how to both diminish the bugger's crampness and yet making him thinner.

I know I have commitment issues with this project :P but I thought I'd just throw this together to see what you guys think.

This is looking nice. I hope to see some slick animation when it's walking.

Now would probably be a good time to re-up my ghora, so you can use him as an example for the Spiker. I still have some issues with the eye perspective to fix, but for now, this will do.

That is the style we will be going for, so you can accommodate accordingly with your spiker. The bottom of yours is looking promising, but is looking to realistic, and not cartoony enough. All of the shadows are a little too strong as well. Try to match the style of the bottom with my ghora.

It looks good, however it would seem that you have missed out the almost belt looking/lazer thing.

Back onto the whole fire ball thing, I was surprised no one thought of this, using 2D with 3D, this was made with a 2D ball trying to recreate the style of Mario's fireball, then with the 3D flames posted from several (I used two here) and apply them with the 2D ball to make this:

The 3D guys just need to make frames and then we have people combine this to make it to the desired style.

Since people were wondering about the direction the flames should go, the artstyle for the flames should be more cartoon styled. The only way 3D will be acceptable is if it can be made not to clash with the rest of the zone art.

For reference, something like this would be a good place to start for those looking for inspiration:

Did this just because. (it was there)

Shall I post all the previous versions in one reply, so that once we vote(?)/decide on which one has the best 'visual feel' to it, we can then start refining it as best we can?

I don't think there's any reason why not to. =|

Thanks - and apologies in advance for the amount of images in this post! psyduck.png

If you want me to turn them all into links, or resize them, please let me know.

Here's the original concept art and sprite for comparison:

The early designs first:

The 'standard' set image:

Still unsure about what shape to have:

Then the various versions on this particular design

And now this particular version just done:

And that's where we're up to eng101.png
