I thought Rush Adventure and Sonic Colors were both really good and overall quite fair-to-the-player, though the former's grinding for minerals was a terrible idea.

I didn't mind it... I like replaying zones and It was just that, nothing boring to do. And that way you played ALL the zones and the Hidden Islands had nice minaral combinations so you could skip other zone in favor of them :P

Yeah, but over the past few years said developers don't have the best track record anyway.
They've also had to tackle a lot recently...with limited time.
Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode I: October 11-13, 2010
Sonic Colors DS: November 16, 2010
Sonic Generations 3DS: November 22, 2011
Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode II: May 15-16, 2012
Sonic 4: Episode I and Sonic Colors DS probably had a decent amount of development time consider how their previous Sonic game released three year prior, but having to make their last two Sonic games in the timespan of a year and a half must have been difficult.

Needing materials to progress wasn't a bad idea, but the execution of it along with the horrendous mission system made that game way more repetitive than it needed to be.

VS. Egg Emperor:
This fight seem very cut down from the Heroes version. I know its because that fight seemed elongated due to the different team abilities you had to use.

I liked this version of Egg Emperor a lot more. It made the boss bearable.

Egg Emperor was a really dysfunctional fight in the original, if only because the best way to hit him was spam thunder shoot at his shield until team blast became available while taking hits from the cannons around that part of the arena. Also the scripting of his charge attack on the straightaways was ill-considered (triggers at really inappropriate times).
