So, Tectoy started receiving preorders on the reissue of the classic Mega Drive.

Apparently this time, they converted the components to be all in a single chip, with some compromises on the end result, though

    FAQ

About to celebrate its 30th anniversary, Tectoy could not fail to celebrate such an important date. And the way we found to celebrate this moment will be the revival of the most successful video games of the 90s, the Mega Drive in a limited edition. In response to requests of thousands of fans, Tectoy endeavored to reproduce the most unforgettable experiences that only the Mega Drive provided.

Below you will find questions and answers that will help you better understand this project.

    1) Is the Mega Drive equal to the original?

No. Because the main components of the original Mega Drive are no longer being manufactured.

    2) Are the Mega Drive components equal to the original?

No, because the originals are no longer being manufactured.

    3) Is this Mega Drive an emulator? Does it run the games with similar components to the original console or via emulation?

This Mega Drive is not an emulator. The unit has a circuit which includes components similar to the original product, since the original integrated circuits are no longer manufactured.

    4) Does this Mega Drive run all cartridges?

The Mega Drive runs most of the original console cartridges. Some cartridges may not work because of the differences between the original hardware and software.

    5) Will Tectoy relaunch cartridges for the Mega Drive?

So far there is no definition. Tectoy would launch cartridges, but for that you need to negotiate licenses, a complex issue when it comes to games and brands created decades ago.

    6) Can I add more games in the micro SD card?

The games included in the SD card supplied with the Mega Drive, have been tested by Tectoy with concerns to the compatibility with the new hardware and all necessary licenses required for their marketing being available. Technically it is possible to add content to this card, however, it is the consumer's responsibility to test the compatibility as well as to check the necessary licenses.

    7) Can you make savestates in the games?

No. You can only save in the game if the original cartridge had supported this function.

    8) Why doesn't this Mega Drive have HDMI?

The vast majority of TVs on sale in the Brazilian market has composite video input (RCA), compatible with the output of the Mega Drive. Adding the HDMI output to the console would raise the final price of the product to the consumer without increasing the original resolution.

    9) How many joysticks does it come with? Can you buy additional joysticks?

The product includes a wired joystick with 3 (three) buttons in the original size. You can buy extra joysticks through the official website

    10) Can I use joysticks from the old Mega Drive?

        Yes, provided they are genuine.

    11) Do accessories like the Game Genie, Sega CD, Power Base Converter, 32x Meganet, Activator, Mega Mouse and multitaps work on new Mega Drive?

        No

    12) Does the Mega Drive work in (LCD, LED, Plasma etc) TVs?

Yes, if the TV has AV input.

    13) How can I set up my TV screen aspect ratio not to distort the image?

The Tectoy recommend setting the TV to screen 4: 3 aspect ratio.

    14) What is the video output resolution of the new Mega Drive?

The resolution is the same as the original, ie, 320x240 pixels

    15) Is the new Mega Drive able to output standard RGB video with the correct cables, as the original Mega Drive did while using a SCART cable?

        No.

    16) Can I use any headphones?

        Yes.

    17) Is the audio output stereo or mono?

        Stereo.

    18) Many emulated solutions have trouble to accurately reproduce the sounds of the original Mega Drive. How will this new console reproduce the audio from the original console?

The Mega Drive plays the audio through similar components, so the result will not be 100% the same as the original.

    19) Is the Mega Drive bivolt?

Yes. The product has a internal power supply supporting 110/220 volts.

    20) What is the warranty duration?

The Mega Drive is covered from 90 days of the purchase tax notice date.

    21) Will this Mega Drive run a game with special chips like Virtua Racing and Sonic & Knuckles?

        No.

    22) How will the packaging?

The package will be based on the original with some changes, such as changing the Styrofoam holder for an ecologically recommended solution.

I just read this and came rushing tto share the news. The price is a bit high for a nearly 30 year old console, though.

So this is an actual clone console and not just another SOAC, right? If so, neat. Not so neat, that price. Jeeze.

It is a SOC, unfortunately. And it seems most add-ons don't work either. Good new is TecToy will be manufacturing new controllers, which will be good for speedrunners :v:

So it's non-premium hardware at a premium price. I see.

I'd love to see someone whip up a high quality Genesis clone using FPGAs, like the AVS. Now that would be something.

Doing that properly would require decapping several chips; notably, the 68k, VDP and I/O chip, at least (YM2612, Z80 and PSG are already decapped, I believe).

Yes but this time the hardware is made to be close to the megadrive, not some random ARM processor emulating the M68k with mobile game support, like the Mega Drive 4/At Games clone.

It's nice, but £97? Even with the games list, I've not paid that much money for a Mega Drive bundle in years!

I'm intrigued. It's a shame there appears to be no Expansion Port, but I'll be pleased if Power Base Converter functionality, along with other quirks of the cart slot are correctly implemented.

From the FAQ, odds are none of them will work:

Just buy a used MD1 and be happy, you can get one with the Sega CD and games for less than $50

Hmm, it surely is crap but it's not similar to the other hardware available, AFAIK

  17. Sounds pretty crappy to me. There's nothing here that I can't already get (in better form even) from the MD/Genesis consoles I already own.

The sad part is that they'll probably end up blaming the failure of this product on the Mega Drive brand, not the crappy hardware they're using. People have been asking for cartridge slots on Tec Toy consoles for years, and now they did the bare minimum to provide that, neglecting all the other aspects of a proper MD/Genesis experience.

Ditto this. Anyone reputable able to make good on producing a 'perfect' clone of a Mega Drive console, but with digital outputs from both the sound and video, and I'm definitely pitching in.

That's a lot of "No" for $125 worth of remanufactured Genesis.
