The Sonic 1 warp effect, similar to the one seen in an early Sonic CD screenshot, makes Sonic gradually engulfed in a bigger force field of sorts and makes him disappear for a few seconds, locking his controls... How could that be used when he comes back from the Special Stage?

Perhaps you would originally have been transported to the special stage immediately upon collecting 50 rings, triggering the warp effect in the process. But they realized how intrusive that would have been, so they replaced that method with the giant rings at the end of the act.

That... doesn't answer the quoted text.

Because I wasn't trying to add to the previous suggestion. I was positing, based on your post, that the effect would have been used for entering the SS rather than exiting it.

I don't think the warp affect was ever completed. It was in testing, so it works as it does in the final. Could have had multiple uses as well. But the part when you come back seems very fitting.

Getting 50 rings and being instantly transported isn't an awful theory either. Since that happens in Sonic Chaos (I think) too.

    Working on my art!
I think in Sonic Chaos it's 100 rings but same thing pretty much.

Those theories contradict the "Special Stage" text in Yasuhara's early map, though.

I know it's 100 rings. I've played sonic Chaos multiple multiple times growing up.

How does the warp affect being used for coming back out of a special stage ring contradict this? I'm saying whats left in the final rom looks clearly like the object was in a testing phase, and the idea to move the giant ring to the end of the level probably occurred before they got done with the object.

I think the discussion about the 50/100 rings and being instantly brought to the special stage was geared more towards the warp affect object, and not the map drawings.
