See that you have to do the code using a special pattern. UP (wait), UP, DOWN (wait), DOWN, UP (wait), UP (wait), UP (wait), UP.

Since the Genesis controler can't press UP-DOWN at the same time, you will understand that you have to succeed pressing UP and one fame and DOWN at the next frame with no interruption!
(wait) simply means you must have at least 1 frame of interruption between button presses.

Sonic 3 was made in Japan on 50 Hz PAL so I guess it's extreamly hard on NTSC 60 Hz. However, it is possible to do the code. I did this code with NTSC 60 Hz enabled in Gens. I succeed most of the times. I got the pattern from testing frames and key presses with a debugger, so this is the only way, and it works.

I always wondered how the code worked for Sonic 3 by itself. No wonder I couldn't do it. ;)

Nothing that concerns this place in the least.
Like I said at Sonic Classic, I always make things ALOT easier on myself by performing the Game Genie code, AA6T-AAXC.

Uh... That video is an audio file of the S3 intro with a lower sampling rate. WTF?

You must use the DivX 4 codec. Else you won't get picture, just sound

ok, downloading now... I will try the video again soon

EDIT: Ok, I tried the "UP (wait), UP, DOWN (wait), DOWN, UP (wait), UP (wait), UP (wait), UP" thing, but I'm too slow, I don't get the last three "up"s in before the title screen comes up... dammit, how does everyone manage it?

I manage by using a Power Plug adaptor (I've never got the code to work for a ROM anyway). Simply program the A button (or any other button you don't use) to have "Up, Up, Down, Down, Up, Up, Up, Up", set the A button macro to turbo, and hold A as the animation is going. Gradually decrease the turbo speed until the game can actually make sense of it. Reset if you messed up and still need to slow it down. By the way, Sonic Jam is not picky at all with this code. You can do it at the title screen after the animation at any speed and it will always work. Did they intentionally make the original Sonic 3 near impossible to do this on intentionally?

Too many "intentionally"s there, but probably. Considering it was split so near to the release date, and what with Sonic Team being so lazy at doing so (leaving things in the level select menu, leaving Knuckles' routes open, etc.), would they have really wanted us to wonder about that?

The usual decision with regard to these debug tools is to pass them off as secret features by hiding them behind key combos. Note Ecco 2's menu, in the beta activated by CCCCCCCC but changed for the final to something insanely strange.

I remember trying the hellish cheat a few years ago on my friends Genny, it was impossible for us to do with a simple MD controller. I wonder why they make it that hard.

Also, why try it on an emulator when there are savestates? :P

I could never do this code on my genesis, so I would just do the sonic 2 trick. You would put the level select code into sonic 2, pull the cart out slowly, then slam the sonic 3 cart in and restart and Sonic 3 would have the code on. =P

Most likely that happens because the Genesis stupidly forgets to erase a few bytes of memory if the A button is pressed. Weird thing.

No. It's not the same title screen, and by that no code can be entered.

  20. Yeah, thank god they changed the way the code is entered for S3K. When I used to play the game on my Genesis, I had this realy weired controler that was sort of analog and I could never do it becuase it was roundish and allowed you to quickly change direction. It was great for Mortal Kombat games but was horrible for entering cheats. Now on the computer, I'm just entering the cheat too damn fast for it to work. :P
