Wasn't this for a hints and tips line ad in a magazine? I'm vaguely remembering seeing it in a GamePro back in the day...
EDIT: I was pointing out nothing special. For some reason, I forgot the Game Gear and the Master System versions of Sonic 2 even existed. Still, why the artist would specifically use the 8-bit games is a guess for me.
