Time for another round of prototypes. We have a weird "in-between" build of the Japanese localization of Ecco 1 for Mega Drive. And we have both an early and a late prototype of Ecco 1 for Game Gear. This release was made possible with our friends at TCRF and arkonviox! Enjoy and see you tomorrow!

  13. You know, normally when you hear of something Star Wars-related that's special and around the holidays it's bad news but this canceled port is rather neat! I can't check it out right now, but I'm definitely excited to try it when I get home.

I have a question, why the change in extension from .bin to .gen and now .md ? aren't they all just .bin (binary) files? Just noticed when copying these to my everdrive to test on hardware and got curious.

I don't follow these things closely, but the *.bin extension is incredibly vague and has been used by all sorts of programs for all sorts of reasons over the years. It's not ideal if you want to specifically mark the file as a Mega Drive ROM, and there have been calls for years to stop using it.

Don't know why the decision was made to swap from *.gen to *.md but Mega Drive is the more accurate name so sounds like good news to me!

.md was already being used quite commonly for markdown files though by the time people decided they wanted it for MegaDrive roms. It's worse than using .bin for that reason. At least .gen wasn't used by something more common.

Meanwhile, Super Famicom roms still use Super Magicom (.smc) format over 20 years later.

    Trying to be useful somehow.
All the ROMS I've had were in .smd extension, so .md was still a bit weird for me. I mean no big deal, the S can stand for Sega and not much problem, it can also stand for Super Magic Drive.

The problem is SMD is a different format of file to BIN/MD.

I am against .gen simply because it's a minority regional name, no matter what the US says.
