Sega PC Reloaded

Do you need a game's disc to install/play it?

I appreciate that this is an old thread but just wanted to say thank you for creating this very useful tool. I mainly loaded up S3&K again to try it out with different MIDI Sounfonts & this tool is a necessity on newer Windows OS's.

 

Ironically, S&KC is the one game where Sega PC Reloaded is not actually necessary to play the game, though it does help.

 

Y'know, I just tried this with my XPLOSIV disc on my Win 10 laptop.

Runs at fast-forward in windowed mode and has no controller support. BUT, a JoyToKey profile later (and playing in fullscreen) and it's all bliss.

 

The framerate problem can be fixed even in windowed mode by simply turning on frame dropping in the game's INI file.

 

It refused to run in full screen mode for me without it.

 

Right, that is a genuine problem with the game on newer systems. I wonder if I could somehow fix that with the mod loader.

 

No big deal if not, but has anyone managed to get Sonic 3D working on Windows 10? I figured that I'd give it a go since trying the Sonic PC Reloaded too.

Has anyone else come across this or know of any workarounds? As I said it's no big deal but it would be convenient to play this on PC without using the Saturn every time or resorting to the IMO inferior Megadrive version or it's emulated counterpart on Steam.

 

Um, yeah, I can play S3D just fine on Win10. No idea what that's about.

 

Again backing up this person; and yet again I was able install from an XPLOSIV re-release version (I picked up these two some months ago, literally just to wait for patches or whatever, unaware this topic existed).

On my Win 10 laptop, no controller support (JoyToKey works around this) and the opening FMV plays at a super-small size. But other than this, it all works. Even tested the special stage.

Now. I should stop fucking around with bare installs (more than anything, I doubt my luck will hold out for that original-release Sonic CD I have lying around...) and try out this Sega PC Reloaded thing... />

 

Well, I meant I can play it fine with Sega PC Reloaded; it doesn't work at all without.

 

In which case, I guess it all 'depends' on system configurations or whatnot. Either way, gonna Reloaded these suckers and wait patiently for Sonic R support. By such a time, I might even have sourced me a disc. :3

 

I have the Xplosiv version of Sonic 3D. I'll try to reinstall it.

Update: DUH, should have checked this first. For some reason it never copied the PCSONIC or bin directories from the disc when it installed. I wonder if it's because I don't use C:\SEGA as the directory or because I have UAC set to a higher level.

Anyway after copying these directories over, it's all working as it should.

I should have checked this but on the other hand, it highlights an issue on the setup program. Not to complain though given the age of the game.

 

Is there really any need for Sonic R support? The 2004 version works perfectly, and it's got the mod loader which can pretty much cover anything you would need Sega PC Reloaded for. Unless you just really want to play the 1998 version for some reason.

 

Beggars can't be choosers, etc. That being said, it's probably more likely I'll get that (also) as an EXPLOSIV rerelease. I'm just in the habit of expecting old games not to work, I guess.

So we're just ignoring the elephant in the room that is just pirating the 2004 version? A converter isn't really any less copyright-infringey...

 

Sonic R Updater doesn't just include every file, it relies on the fact that the user installed any port of the game prior meaning, the intent is that the user owns at least some version of the PC port and installs it- and since the release of the 2004 port wasn't marketed (at all) nor does it physically distinguish itself from the 1998 releases, why should I care which the user has? So at least there was an attempt made at making it fall in a more legal-gray area in this way. In order to use Sonic R Updater in a profoundly illegal way, the user would need to purposely pirate some other port first, which is the really illegal action taking place.

Since you brought it up, are we gonna also gloss over how all the rom hacks in the Sonic Hacking Contests are uploaded as complete binaries instead of patches too while we're at it? Or do Genesis games not count because they're old?

 

I never said I had a problem with pirating something old. On the contrary, it felt to me like people were restricting themselves to the 1998 version because they didn't like it, but then in the same breath would use an updater, which to my understanding isn't any more legal. Just because a patcher contains only half the files or so doesn't mean those few files are no longer under copyright.
