Long story short, someone asked me to take a look because the server was barfing. Turns out that the board was saving error logs that were hundreds of MB large (if not in the GB range, each) and it ran out of disk space. Nuked that post-haste, then it turns out that the 'cache' folder isn't just for error-dumping and IPB is too stupid to rebuild the cache when it vanishes, so after I declared the forums working, the only thing working was the index page (and even then most of the generic text was missing). :specialed: Fast forward another hour and (after much dicking around in the admin panel with half the text gone) I finally rebuilt the language cache, fixing that issue, and about 20 minutes of stumbling around later I rebuilt the skin cache and everything is now fine, nothing is wrong. I also set up a cron job to periodically (that is, every fucking minute) wipe out the error log because that shit grows up to 60 MB in the span of a few minutes. Hopefully this doesn't happen again.
Sounds like something I'd end up accidentally doing! :v: Either way, great to see an explanation for this all. Glad to know it's all okay now!
Does this have anything to do with the lists of topics within subfora apparently being stuck in the past, appearing as they did several hours ago? The main page shows the latest topics/posts for each subforum as expected, but clicking through to the subforum itself shows it as it was earlier in the day. (Accessing the latest topic via the link on the main page or finding it manually both work OK.) Main page: Subforum: FWIW, I cleared my browser's cache, which did nothing. Also: submitting a post initially sends me to a blank window with the URL “forums.sonicretro.org/index.php?”, and I have to refresh or otherwise (re)load any page to get any actual content. Editing, whether inline or using the full editor, seems to work as normal.
Just to confirm, I am having the same issue as dsrb is, so it isn't just a one-user thing. As in both the post order not updating in the subforums, and the server error issue in the same manner.
If the error log needs to be wiped so often that it's literally useless, isn't it possible to just disable it? Or is the board software so retarded it can't do that? Though I suppose it'd be nice to get a copy of those logs (before it gets wiped) and check what's generating so many errors... though I have the feeling they aren't even errors but just silly warnings that aren't helpful at all.
EDIT: trash, duped because board was NOT showing the page (was redirecting me to index.php?, without any parameters) so I went back and clicked reply again...
Seems that there's still glitches that need to be tweaked out (so many people are double posting!) Hopefully it'll all be sorted out soon. Edit: Seems like whenever you make a post, it loads an error page. I guess most people go back and click reply again but your post was still made.
I think it should go without saying, but if you get a white screen after hitting Add Reply, do not hit Add Reply again. Otherwise you'll get the dodecatuple-post issue everyone else has been getting and feel silly. Instead, copy your post (in case it gets lost), refresh, and double-check the most-recent posts. The two (edit: three, now) times I've gotten a white screen, it shows up in there despite not showing up in the actual topic, and eventually does show up in the original topic as well.
I'm happy to see that I'm not insane! The only place I noticed this happening for me was in creative works when I was posting new content in my topic. I didn't notice it happening in General Discussion. I usually have a habit of copying my post before pressing add reply. Thanks for fixing the issue! EDIT: Ok...with this very post I got the white screen, but then I refreshed the page and saw my post here.
I also forgot to report that its also happening in 'On The Forums' on the info page, if that helps at all.
Are you sure there are no errors that, you know, need fixing? That being said, fixes are always great.
Speaking as an admin of my own site (with its own error log!), even a properly working site throws tons of errors in that log. They can't all be fixed. And they're often stupid.
I wonder how many bugs does IPB have on average? Seems to be one of the glitchiest board software around? Maybe I don't recall other boards having as many bugs but they could have also been quiet on them?
