It is with great reluctance that I return to co-host yet another hacking contest with Hyenafox and a few other select people. JC Ferggy was mistaken about the status of the contest. Hyenafox and myself have been collaborating on what this year's rules would be since DRX's proto was released. If JC Ferggy had PMed me before posting his previous topic (which he hadn't... he PMed me about seven hours afterword) then I would have been happy to have posted this topic and cleared things up. I'll have it known that THIS time I do not plan on disappearing as I have every other time. Part of it was my busy life (working 12 hour shifts takes its toll) and there was also my heavy use of drugs (mostly ecstasy) and general lack of motivation. The discovery of so many prototypes in such a short period of time, however, has rekindled my interest and I've cut down on my drug consumption by a considerable amount. Things, however, can change in a year's time, so Hyenafox will be the main driving force behind the contest this time.. but I want it known that I don't plan to bail again. I thank you all for your well wishes towards me when I left last time, but I want it made very clear that I don't intend for this to happen again.

With all that said and done... here's this years contest...

PRIZES

There are a lot fewer trophies this time. This is a contest and not everyone is going win... not to mention that we don't receive all THAT many entries every year. Hopefully it will be different this time around and I have incentive this time =) Here we go...

Hidden Palace Zone Trophy - Grand Prize Trophy. Winner will receive a prize that's TBA between 50 - 100 USD. Cash can be substituted. No. I'm not joking. ENTER YOUR MOTHERFUCKING HACK.
Dust Hill Trophy – Second place
Wood Trophy – Third place
Genocide City Trophy – This award goes to the hardest game or level
Rainbow Trophy – this goes to the best palette hack
Lava Reef Trophy – this goes to the longest level hack (based on time taken to beat)
Green Hill Trophy – this goes to the level or game that plays most like a Sonic level or game
Labyrinth Trophy – most confusing level
1337!!! Trophy – worst Sonic hack
1000101 Trophy – best technical hack
Windy Valley Trophy – best art hack
Shadow Trophy – best Hentai-based hack... I'm still waiting, motherfuckers >=P
WTF?! Trophy – most unique hack
Christmas Present Trophy - most unexpected hack
Piano Trophy - best musical hack
The Super Duper Amazing Level Trophy - best level layout hack

As usual, one hack can win multiple trophies and multiple hacks can be submitted by one person...

RULES

1) You will have until 12:00 AM June 31st MST to get all of your hacks in to me or Hyenafox
2) Hacks must be e-mailed as either ROMs or savestates (genecyst / gens format only). In the age of broadband, IPS is just retarded and you can attach massive files with Gmail and most other mail carriers.
3) There are no limits on editors.
4) New Trophies may be added or removed during the contest, although that is HIGHLY doubtful
5) Entries may be sent in for any console, though you'll have to tell us what it is.
6) You may reach me at [email protected] (get rid of filler) for questions and for sending hacks. You may also PM me or Hyenafox or ask in this thread.
7) The entry must be sent in as the following:

Name / Alias:
Name of Hack:
Game of Origin:
Console of Origin:
E-mail:

Links to your hack in this topic are retarded. I know I don't want to sort (and I'm sure Hyenafox doesn't either) through 200 replies for your hack. If you want, I will be happy to take a link to your hack through e-mail.
8) Updated hacks are always taken through the end of the contest. No late hacks will be accepted -- end of story
9) Rules may change at any time. Check back often.

OTHER

Hyenafox will be the main judge this time around, although I still plan on judging at this point in time. I doubt that will change =) With any luck we'll actually have banners for winners this time, so that'll be really awesome. You have until midnight of June 31st so start procrastinating as quickly as possible! ~.^

Best of luck,

Nayr / Samantha

Fuck. Me. Sideways.

50 - 100 USD? Hmmm... converted to AUD, that would be between 62.86 - 125.74 AUD.

That would be an awesome prize. =P

If Megamix wins, I'm giving all of it to Stealth.

Seriously, he deserves it, and needs it a lot more than I do. I'll be working my best to go for that. =P

I'll be entering Sonic in Chaotix. For those of you who think it's just a "simple art & palette hack," please go kill yourselves. First of all, Chaotix's art format was barely even documented, so some of it I actually had to figure out on my own, which I then applied to my program. And 9 times out of 10 it wouldn't display at the proper position on screen. Now try doing this for each of Mighty's frames and the seperate arms & rings frames. Plus, Mighty on the title screen is made up of a couple different frames, his special stage art, and the title card text art. But I guess if art and palette hacks aren't good enough nowadays, and even maybe a physics edit for the next release, I can just forget about this hack.

So it may be just a palette and art hack, with some other minor touches. But if it's just a "simple art & palette hack," then lets see you try to partially crack an art format & port some character from one game to another game that applys the format. And that's exactly the reason why I'm entering it; it is not just a simple art and palette hack.

It's something that's never really been done before, and is indeed a very unique hack. Therefore I will be going for the WTF?! trophy. However, by the title of the trophy, I'm going to assume that you mean 'unique' by it being 'weird and random.' Well I'm still giving it a shot.

The "WTF" trophy doesn't necessarily mean "awful" , it means "totally freaking whoa." as far as I'm concerned. We did end up adding a new one as well, for the same kind of thing, only different (I.E. we haven't seen it or heard of it) and that is the Christmas present trophy. That way hacks like yours are more likely to be in contention for the WTF trophy.

Any chance of adding the hardware trophy? I'll happily judge all the entries on hardware. I wanted to last contest but noone gave me the archive with all the entries after repeated requests =P

Well that pretty much seals it. I'm going to try to revive my hack. I guarantee nothing, unlike last time when I said "Oh, I'll have a hack out by *insert date here*" It probably won't have anything on MegaMix or anything else similar but it will at least have some bitchin level art!

Will there be smaller prizes for second and third place? 5-10 USD? Just a thought, sence pretty much the more of the minor hackers around here (Robjoe, myself) wouldn't stand a chance next to Project: Chaos and Megamix.

Ulitma suggested a moneypot where everyone donates a little money into the final prize and whoever wins gets all that money. I would still be pitching in $100 usd. Thoughts?

Maybe have the people who enter their hack donate 5 bucks? I don't know, just some thinking.

It shouldn't really cost money to enter in a contest for hacking a rom. :P
