And I don't like the figure eight. Opinions. Something used in at least 8 games (Sonic 1, Sonic 2, Sonic 3, Sonic & Knuckles, Sonic 1 8-bit, Sonic 2 8-bit, Sonic Chaos, Sonic Triple Trouble) screams more "classic" than something used in only 2 (Sonic CD and Brawl). I'm sorry for all the peel-out and figure eight fans, but Sonic is not meant to run in that way. Period.
You can MAYBE use it when Sonic reaches his maximum speed to show that he's done so, but that's about it as far as I'm concerned. I never saw the appeal for me, the wheel-o-feet is classic and as much Sonic as it is classic cartoons.
As well as looking more "classic", I'd like to point out that the wheel-o-feet, while still technically impossible, at least looks more natural and physically possible than the figure-eight. I mean, I never understood how the figure-eight was meant to represent Ludicrous Speed, anyway.
There's something about either infinity (as in infinite speed?) or rubber-banding in there somewhere, I'd guess.
Again, jumping in kinda late here, but I didn't see this issue resolved so I'm making a proposition. A few pages ago, someone mentioned that it never felt natural that Knuckles had the spindash. I agree with this, as I always felt that the spindash was Sonic's move, that Tail's picked up due to him being Sonic all the time. However, I also agree with the fact that he shouldn't have anything other than the spindash. How to solve this dilemma? Same way Sonic Advance 2 did. Amy had a spindash, except, it wasn't a spindash per se. It was a "run in place like a baffoon then shoot off in a ball"-dash. Why can't knuckles also have his own way of performing the spindash? Just throwing that out there, because current discussion of moves is pretty pointless due to reasons that I'm sure Chimpo has reiterated more than once.
About why the peel-out symbolized speed... Sonic throws his body forward, and his arms back, and looks much more aerodynamic. Maybe we SHOULD include it as a max speed animation.
Yeah, I think if we had to include the peel out figure-8 thing, it'd only be for full speed. I personally wouldn't want the peel out in this game; it's somewhat of a game breaker compared to the spin dash. At least the spin dash could be utilized to break through some obstacles- the peel out didn't really do anything to aid gameplay.
If there is really no way the Peel Out can be entered, I believe the same body and a inclined wheel-o-feet makes the same effect, somewhat. EDIT: something amongst these lines. (I still don't understand the mechanics of image posting in this forum)

It would look even more awesome with the new sprite we have.
Reminds me of the way Sonic was running in this commercial. And with the pose he has there, his leg would be passing through his arm. That's what I see. But if you're going to lower Sonic's acceleration when he reaches high speed, a different pose would be a good way to communicate this to the player. And during the "figure 8" run, Sonic's feet don't actually move in a figure 8. If you look at the individual sprites, it's just supposed to communicate that his fett are moving way too fast to be seen. Plus, the figure 8 is only four frames.
Yes it would go through his arm, since I just slapped them to show it, didn't edit much. Fact is, I can understand that logic of not seeing Sonic's feet, and wouldn't mind using the Peel-Out. But the 4 frame argument holds no water- Chimpo's making everything super-smooth, so even if we DO end up using the peel-out, it will have a lot more frames.

Sonic has always ran the EXACT same way/pose in ever Genesis game. It's his trademark, I don't think it should be changed.
