3 years has been a lot of time for me to full refine my thoughts on the music of the franchise. I'm just now realizing how great Sonic Rush's soundtrack is. Samples hit a sweet spot for me and the soundtrack is full of them. Sonic Forces also had a soundtrack I enjoyed, though admittedly the overuse of synths did hurt my ears after a bit. The vocal songs hit a decent balance between corny and cool, but the melodies are addictive as hell. Sonic Runners might be one of my favorite soundtracks to a Sonic game, hands-down. Every song is evocative of the spirit of the franchise and Ohtani's music direction is near-impeccable. This might just be his most focused work. I'm planning a full write-up on the Sonic 06 soundtrack and why I think it's one of the best game soundtracks out there, despite the obvious stigma attached to the game itself.

Oh, '06's soundtrack is seriously phenomenal. It feels like both a refinement of and progression from the audiovisual themes of each level as it was in Adventure, to how they are in 06.

(I know not every 06 level has a counterpart in Adventure, Aquatic Base comes to mind first and foremost, but I mean it in a general sense.)
And Rush's soundtrack... seriously amazing. I feel like almost everyone in the community had a chuckle at it because of samples used in, say, Ethno Circus (taco taco meat), but 10+ years later, I think we can all recognize Naganuma's sheer genius, right?
I also find Forces' synth-poppy vocal tracks pretty great. The vocals themselves aren't amazing, but I don't know that vocals in Sonic songs have ever been, honestly? It really is all about those melodies... so catchy!

Though not directly related to Sonic, this Phantasy Star live concert has, as far as I know, the only known footage we have of Runblebee (the guy who rapped Catch Me If You Can and most of the Secret Rings soundtrack). He performs along with Jun Senoue, Takenobu Mitsuyoshi, and Hideaki Kobayashi.

Confession: I really, really like Sonic Forces' soundtrack. It crept back into my headspace a year later and really solidified my opinion. I like the avatar's vocal tracks. That cheesy year 2000 gabber techno sound was an incisive choice for the child fanboy surrogate character. Instantly brings me back to 2004 when the Newgrounds fancharacter generator was en vogue and Sonic World had an AMV section where people were taking clips of Tails from Sonic X and setting them to Smile.dk's Dragonfly. I admire the ambition, drama and energy Sega's sound team envisioned for that game. It's the cutest soundtrack ever.

Yesssss thank you. That Aqua Slide level or whatever? Awesome stuff. Besides Classic's songs somewhat Forces had a great soundtrack.

I recently started listening to the Sonic Forces soundtrack to and why do they think forcing Gen/MD sounding music is beyond me. Sonic Mania has proven that needs to be over! This Sonic 4-ism of the music needs to end. They are going for unnecessary nostalgia points when in truth, those sounds were only cutting edge FOR ITS TIME. It sounds like garbage, especially those timpanis in Egg Dragoon Mk. II. They sounded ok and convincing in crappy 80s/90s CRT tv mono speakers, but not now.

Act 3 actually, but yeah, that's the best song in history.

Also, I noticed someone mentioned Yellow Magic Orchestra: Sega actually used one of their songs (Rydeen) in Super Locomotive (1982).

  8. I think Sonic Runners has one of my favorite soundtracks in Sonic games to be honest. Even though' if it sounds very like "anime-ish" but I don't think that's really a problem... right?

Slice of life visual novel, coming soon...?
Sonic Runners' soundtrack is my favorite Sonic soundtrack by far.
It's just a shame it was used for a free to play mobile game, but the Runners Music Mod for Sonic Lost World does this ost justice. (assuming you like playing lost world, of course)
