The similarity is perhaps more apparent in this arranged version:

I probably should update the first post. That one in particular has been listed at least 4 times haha.

I think I may have posted this already but as a separate thread quite a while back but it's pretty much worth posting here again.

The album "Raise the Pressure" by Electronic (collab album) has a track on it that uses percussion not sampled from Sonic 1/2, but uses what I'm guessing is the exact same ones in the games themselves.
    It's track 12 "How Long"-

Might be a bit of a stretch, but I found some more similar sounds that were used in Sonic Adventure that can be found on Korg synths.

My favorite find (maybe) is that I found the saw wave lead that's used in Twinkle Park - Pleasure Castle, one of my favorite songs. What makes this kind of a stretch is that it comes from the Korg M1, which is one of the first music workstations. They were still being manufactured and stuff around 1994 though, so maybe it's possible. The sound comes from the "MS-20" preset (one of Korg's analog synths btw), which is featured on the MPC-11 AKIRA card, preset 96. I took a Pleasure Castle MIDI and recorded live with Audacity so I can mess with the portamento controller in real time and I came up with this. Sounds similar, doesn't it?

The next one comes from the M1 as well. The drum snare that's used in "Hey You! It's Time to Speedup!" track is another sample that can be found here as well. This can be found under the BD&SDCatlog1 preset on the Korg Legacy Collection card. There might be other drum samples from here as well, but I can't seem to find any easily.

I wish I knew what drum machine Jun Senoue used for some of his songs, though.

The Korg M1 was wildly popular and is still used even today. Thats pretty cool dude. Theres a few of them, like if you are using Legacy Collection go into Legacy Cell and find "Sign Lead", its very similar to the mystic mansion lead.

  8. I can ask him on Twitter, but for which songs? Pleasure Castle?

I think this fits here. If it doesn't, who the fuck cares because your ears are too busy orgasming.

Holy shit. This is outstanding. You know a song's good when it starts using huge, victorious bells and it doesn't sound overblown or cheesy because the song's just that good.
I think this is probably the finest Green Hill arrangement I've heard in a long time, possibly ever.

Well, in my defense (months later :v: ), I would say that the MJ article was fairly incomplete before I started working on it. And I do my best not to introduce false information. The MJ story is a difficult one to research because of so much misinformation floating around. Good thing it is a communal wiki.

  12. Not only misinformation, but a reluctance for anybody to talk about it. I've asked quite a few people associated with Sonic 3, and they all back off eventually. They're covering up for MJ, since he holds so much legal power, I'd assume.

Trying to get outta Dr. Dre mode, and actually release an album.
I can understand that, considering that Sega would have to change the music (again) in later ports of the game, or somehow compensate for unpaid royalties if the estate decided to take legal action, which likely isn't gonna happen due to the high possibility that nobody from the estate was/is aware of MJ's involvement with that game.

Getting back on topic with some musical similarities, I'll post some Bobby Brown similarities here I didn't find in this thread.

    Sonic 1:

    Spring Yard Zone

    Every Little Step

    Sonic 2:

    Mystic Cave

    We're Back

I think it's the basslines that stand out the most in this case, but they seem to share almost the same melody too.

While on the subject of MJ and Sonic 3 I know people are aware of the S3 Credits being the same as "Stranger in Moscow", the song "Jam" being sampled in Carnival Night Zone, and various other comparisons but there is one thing I noticed recently while listening to the Dangerous album that I'm not sure if people know of yet. If you go to 1:42 in this video you can hear knuckles theme (when he hits switches to sabotage Sonic throughout the game), almost too similar to be coincidental, although it is a simplistic beat. Note: The MJ video may be slightly NSFW.

This isn't a direct comparison of two songs, but since the "music that reminds you of Sonic" thread seems to have sunken into the murky depths of history:

Fuck me if this doesn't sound like something straight out of Colours, with just a dash of Rush Adventure.

    ...

First, NSFW isn't how I'd describe that video. Second, that similarity has been discovered since either 2007 or 2008. And that isn't the only MJ song S3's Knuckles' theme goes with.

Nice one for everyone who's crazy about Sonic CD (EU).

I found the sample cd that they must've used to get MANY of their samples. It's a pretty popular one published in 1990 called Zero-G DATAFILE 01. It has a BUTTLOAD of early 90s/late 80s hip hop samples and loops.

Synthmania put up some small demos from each CD. You can listen to 1, 2 and 3 here.
    Sonic CD:

ZG VOX 32.3 - Turn it Up! ~ Stardust Speedway Present (it's a lower pitch in the song)
ZG HFX 46.5 - Alarm ~ Not Sonic CD related, but it's from "Brand-new World" (from the Sonic Remix album)
ZG SCR 58.# - Record Scratch ~ Stardust Speedway Present (good chance they used most of these)

In another version of this cd, there are other samples that were supposedly used as well. But I can't seem to find these samples in this one. Perhaps this is for Volume 2, since there were a total of 3 volumes I think. Someone over at HCS Forum pointed these out.

    (Palmtree Panic Bad Future)
    ZG2 SPEECH 5

    (Palmtree Panic Bad Future ELEVATOR)
    ZG2 SFSPEECH

    (Collision Chaos Present)
    ZG2 SPEECH 5

    (Stardust Present)
    ZG2 SPEECH 2

    (Boss Theme)
    ZG2 SPEECH 3
    ZG2 SPEECH 5
    ZG2 GUITARS2

If you've played Jet Set Radio, you might recognize a lot of the samples included in these CDs as well. I've heard at least a dozen of these in some Konami music games. :)

EDIT: Before I forget, I also found another instance where the Sonic 1 drum snare is used. Some of the songs in Darius Gaiden use the sample. The music in the game is sequenced, perhaps there's a way to extract the sample out?

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Cinossu EDIT: Sorry, but seeing as you can actually still purchase these packs, they are considered illegal download links. As such, they've been removed.
ehw edit: Whoops, didn't know that. I assumed since these were pretty old that they were not in print anymore, or in public domain. My mistake. Replaced them with demo tracks from synthmania in the mean time.

I wouldn't be surprised if this was either a coincidence or that they were both inspired by something else, but it was enough for me to stop work and click the pause button on netflix.

Oh wow. I always thought that music seemed a bit familiar, it's definitely similar to the Emerald Challenge.
