First Earthbound Beginnings and now this. E3 has been really generous to cult franchises this year. :v:

So, 14 years eh?....Do we call him Akira Yuki now? Yea I was put off by Ryo's face more then anything. Shenhua, while not as good looking as the original Dreamcast models, did not grate on me as much.
    I'll pledge money on Friday.

It would be a reasonable assumption that no serious development has started yet given that they didn't have guaranteed funding, and that everything you see is composed of quick placeholders knocked up to have something to show on the Kickstarter page. I have no doubt the actual game will look nothing like what you currently see, and that the characters and environments will be better refined in terms of both graphical polish and resemblance to their Dreamcast/Xbox-era selves.

Some clarification was put on the FAQ page a little bit ago:

Is this game affiliated with SEGA?
SEGA has officially given us the rights to use the "Shenmue" license.

Are there plans for the HD versions of Shenmue 1 & 2?
The property rights for Shenmue 1 and Shenmue 2 belong to SEGA, so we are not in a position to comment on that.

Will there be an Xbox/Wii U/Linux/Mac version for Shenmue 3?
Currently we are planning development only for PC (Windows) and PS4. Other platforms have not been decided yet.

The last bit messes with my prediction of Sony stepping in to help fund after the initial 2 million was hit. Not so much the PC part, keep in mind Street Fighter V, but a cold "PS4 will be the only console" is what I would have expected. Either way, someone's gotta be pushing them more money, definitely agree that this is an interest check. I'm just curious on who finally bit the bullet on this one.

They may have had the idea of making it look like an "indie game", because that's the "cool" thing nowadays. =P

I haven't played the first two games, and I'm not really impressed by the video on the Kickstarter page... I know the game is a very very early prototype, but the video was poorly edited to the point of being kind of obnoxious to watch. Still, I'm glad this game is happening since I know so many people have been waiting for it for a long time, and hopefully they'll be able to make something better with all the funding they're getting.

Though it is weird that they debuted a Kickstarter during an E3 press conference, it definitely gave the campaign a lot of exposure. I don't want to condemn Sony for it until we have more info on what their exact involvement with the game is.

  8. Every time there's another kickstarter, it feels so good to be able to prove to the big boys that YES, games like this DO make money.

Yeah it feels so good that kickstarter projects that barely show anything (and what they actually show is of subpar quality at best) but have big names behind them DO make money.

Not where I want to be.
Sonic (?): Coming summer of 2055...?
Especially when those names have been trying to make games like that for years but couldn't prove to the big boys that it'll make any money or brew any interest!

  12. I need a grab a copy of 1&2 for DC some time and see what the fuss is about!

In the meantime can anyone recommend a good let's play of the first game (preferably a serious playthough)? There's quite a few to choose from on YouTube.

I've always wanted to do a full stream of the series, showing off the secrets and completing things the way most people don't.

Maybe I could do that next week. I know Yokosuka inside out, might need to refresh my memory with 2 before I do anything serious.

So......Turbo OutRun and Power Drift had better be there for Ryo to play!

  15. Sweet, I look forward to it if you do :)

  16. I'm not pledging money up front for a game I was promised decades ago that was never delivered to me.

"On a moonless night, should you pray to the stars, your wishes shall be realised."

Shenmue 3 Kickstarter began on a New Moon.
Shenmue 3 Kickstarter ends on a New Moon.

Could be a coincidence, of course.

    Some random RPG project.
Actually, if anything, these kickstarters show that games like these DON'T make money. Look at Bloodstained for example, which had 64,867 backers over the course of one month. That's essentially only 64,867 copies of the game being "sold" which doesn't even break the 100,000 mark, let alone 1 million. The reason kickstarters are even successful in the first place is because they target the small niche/hardcore demographic that's willing to toss larger amounts of cash then the normal consumer. In addition, the average game budget today is roughly $20 million; whereas most kickstaters only reach a few million on average. To put this even further into prospective, Mighty No. 9 had 67,226 backers, Shantae had 18,558, and TJ&E had 8,873.

Kickstarters are great because they allow gamers to get niche genres/series that aren't able to compete against the mainstream, but it's delusional to think that kickstater games make money even remotely comparable to the industry's top sellers.
