Sonic 1 is World War II. Sonic is America and Eggman is the Nazis, and the animals are all the other countries who were cowering in fear and twiddling their thumbs before the great US of A saved the day forever and is the good guy of all countries.

You know that bonus stage in Sonic 3&K which basically plays like a Sonic 1 Special stage?
What if, after getting all the Emeralds from them in Sonic 1, he converted the special stages into his own private casino, during the events of Sonic 2 (probably stole one of the casino slots while at Casino Night zone), so when he needs to get his gambling fix he just warps to one of the Bonus stages? espcially since Carnival night is a much more KID FRIENDLY zone with no gambling for all of the non-existant people.
We all know how much of a gambling addict that Sonic is after all, maybe that's why his face is plastered all over Casino Night zone anyways, due to being the one guy to spend so many rings there, he's almost like an advertisement. No wonder Eggman can manage to afford to build all those robots.
Well, that's my theory anyways!

Well at least we know why there hasn't been another NiGHTS into Dreams: Sonic must've killed Nights, stuffed him [literally], and put him into the Special Zone (ala Sonic Adventure) - because that's not really a statue!

Sonic is Great Britain, struggling to fight against the evil of Nazi Germany. Tails is the USA, who only bothered to enter the scene afterwards when some crap happened to his plane.
Knuckles is Italy, who only bothered to enter the good guys side after he realised shit wasn't going well on the other.
Amy is France, having a loud mouth, but ultimately having to be liberated.
Shadow is Japan, who eventually sees the error of their ways after realising they were on their way to dooming themselves.

Addition: Rouge is the Soviet Union, teaming up with the Allies until the Nazis were vanquished, then going back off to her own goals, opposed to our heroes at times.
