Just wondering if anyone has attempted to rebuild the levels from the Sega Game Gear Sonic titles, like Sonic Triple Trouble and the like. Would love to see those games rebuilt using the vastly superior sonic 1 - 3&K style engines.
http://derzocker.deviantart.com/art/Triple-Trouble-16-Bit-Mock-Ups-179041615 This guy made mock ups back in the day, unfortunately that's all we got. Mock ups. Still cool looking though.
damn, nice mock-ups. and now im left with a feeling of massive loss. All that possibility and we don't have it!
So close :U Music remakes are way more popular than graphic remakes, by the way. We have 16-bit version of most 8-bit songs, if not all.
Hmmm Wonder if Spriter's Resource has the 8 bit tiles of the game gear titles, maybe I can fudge around and remake the tiles and have someone just set them in the game. *goes to look for tiles*
Is there a difference in tile size between the Game Gear and Sega Gen, and if so, can someone give me the pixel rez, I got the Game Gear tiles, in 32x32, just wondering if thats the same in sega's gens sonics, or is it 128 like they are ripped in the sprite site.
One problem with using the original tiles is that the SMS/GG horizontal resolution was lower than the Mega Drive's, so all the graphics would need to be horizontally stretched first in order for them to look correct. Else, you'd get a lot of oval-shaped loops, thinner-than-usual trees, etc.
http://info.sonicretro.org/Sonic_2_-_The_Hybridization_Project I did this way back in the early days when compressed art hacking was new and the disassembly was a far away dream. It's pretty rough around the edges compared to today's hacks.
First thanks again. I originally made the graphics to encourage people to finally make a few remakes. Well, if anyone wants to tackle the task, I'll gladly share my tilesets. Though most of them are still unfinished (yeah, even after all those years) and unorganized. The checkerboard pattern from GTZ drives me crazy and makes it a pain to organize into proper chunks without messing up the pattern Just look at this mess^^ Though I wouldn't say no either if someone wants to help me to complete the sets. Many of them already have a lot of tiles, (some not much) they need to be cut down into useful chunks. Also help with some palette and pattern choices would be nice too from time too. Don't ask how many times I tried to start Tidal Planet. I already fail with the base block in this set^^' If there's enough interest I could start a workshop thread, so we could get them finished together
And I always loved that project of yours, Doc Eggfan. I'm a huge lover of the 8 bits games ( specially the first two) and always wondered why there isn't more hacks who uses things from them. I would love complete "Hd remakes" of them into the 16 bits engine. Specially Sonic 2. That game is awesome.
On a somewhat related note, has anyone ever tried recreating the level layouts from Sonic Pocket Adventure in a Sonic 2 hack? Most of SPA's level art are basically 8-bit versions of Sonic 2 stages, but the level layouts are completely different from the corresponding S2 zone, so there wouldn't even be need to convert much art unless you wanted to recreate the SPA Bosses as well.
Thanks. I wish I had more time to devote to my long abandoned projects. Can't wait until I'm old and retired.
I never did understand why the mantle has never been taken up to 1:1 recreate the Game Gear games, it seems like an interesting project to make the 8-bit games work with their 16-bit brothers. Hell its too bad the idea can't be presented to SEGA and have Team TaxStealth work on the project, if we can't ever have Sonic 3 & Knuckles I'd buy 16-bit remakes of the GG saga games.
Yea, give me a bit, I gotta go chase down my jaw. So yea, had to run to the store to get my jaw....(and a gallon of milk) but yea, these sprites are amazing. Really should keep going, even if its only for a hour a day! I don't think I could touch that level of quality.
@Zeoinx: To your question about game gear remakes, there was also the jungle zone port that was in Sonic the Hedgehog Plus Though the level layout was a tad bit small. That and it was only one act long. still it was pretty neat to see and play at the time. @DerZocker: that level art looks awesome Dude. Too bad it's only a mock-up :<
So after being inspired by the great sprite sheets posted earlier......I attempted to edit them, well, needless to say Im not THAT good, thus, I cheated a little, I copied the official game tile's and blew them up 1 : 2 pixel scale, and edited from there. After spending about a hour or so....and some relaxing music from Chrono Cross, I came up with...... A PALM TREE! Will this work oh great and holy programmers? As Im not sure about my pallet. That said, I've been up all night, Im going to hug my pillow for a few hours and if you like it, ill see about doing ALL the tiles that way.
It's SORTA around this line, but I made some 16 bit translations of the Mean Bean Machine 8 bit backgrounds: I'm not 100% positive they'd work within the palettes and VRAM space since MBM hacking is sparse however.
those are pretty awesome, Psi. I hope to see them implemented someday. Another thing I hope to tackle someday is doing a few Tails' Adventure tilesets.
So Im not as talented as DerZocker at building the most epic of sprites, that said, I did start my own attempt at a tileset for the first level, I'll be progressing through the tiles little by little, here is what I got so far. By all means, give critique. Just don't be to harsh, im newbie! xD Each tile is 32x32 (So just to make sure the tile's tiled correction in a game engine, I poped the sheet into RPG Maker XP's database, and made this, sonic was added after I screenshot the result.+
