Real or not, the line quality really sucks on that top one, and the bottom one looks like whomever scanned and coloured it doesn't know how to adjust levels (or scan in mono, derp) -- and there's some NASTY digital 'fixing' of the black fills in proto-Blaze there. There may have been a reason these things were never meant to see the light of day.

That was going to be Blaze?
Wow. Sonic Team really did have deviantart artists on their staff back then.

I mean, right? Sonic Team has always drawn absolutely perfect concept art for everything.

It's a good thing they've never done that on any other project. Or that an idea like that is endemic to concept art in general. :P

Looks like (rather mediocre) fanart. So that's just a half-assed mockup of Blaze, huh? I like the idea that she could have had hair, actually, instead of those three weird feather things.

Yes, concept sketches aren't exactly designed to look amazing and just used to help cultivate and modify ideas. This should not be surprising at all. This stuff isn't usually intended to be released to the public.

Really looks like they half-ass their concept art, and later realize what a terrible mistake they made. Although that jumping Sonic in the top-right looks decent enough.

But sweet Jesus what the FUCK is that?

I can confirm that concept was originally for Sonic Heroes as a move for Sonic, presumably when he jumps and then switches into a spin, but the idea got scraped due to problems implenting it (I guess it was mostly a key mapping issue, since you have a key to switch characters, a key for special attack, a key for jumping and a key for the Homing Attack... Maybe this move would be a variant of the homing attack, like jumping and pressing the homing attack button would do the spin-jump)
The other two, they are both different designs of Silver and Sonic the Werewolf. It's just juggling different concepts to see which one is better.

I kind of wish they would've stuck with a more feral looking Werehog like in that concept art. It would've made me more willing to put up with the Unleashed night stages if I wasn't looking at such an awkard looking character for twenty minutes at a time

It wasn't the character design that was the problem, it was the bland &repetitve music, bland & repetitive design and layouts, and bland & repetitive enemies and abilities that made the Werehog stages such a chore to play.
Actually, those two words are perfect for summing it up. Bland. And repetitive. Just like my choice of words.
