Sonic 2 for the Game Gear was, like, my all time favorite game on a handheld ever. See, when I was little, and had Sonic 2 on my Genesis and Mega Man 5 on my NES, my favorite console games at the time, I had this GG, but only like 3 games with it. They were Sonic 1 (Which came with it), Sonic 2, and Battletoads. Sonic 1 got boring to me for some reason, but I kept coming back to Sonic 2, mostly because it had a level select code. It was a challenging, but fun and enjoyable game, and really shows how much the franchise has changed since then (You could even compare it to it's console counter parts). Battletoads was just too hard for my 5 year old mind though, I wasn't any good a beat-em-ups then.

So, really, how many of you have played it? And how many had played it on an actual Game Gear? (Or the Master System if you had that version). I'm just curious because it was a damn good game. Anyone agree?

Had it as a little kid on a Master System. Liked it but found it sadistically difficult. Still do, really. Don't think I ever got anywhere near beating it.

I beat S2GG (well, SMS. I didn't have a Game Gear) with all emeralds when I was seven. I've never been able to repeat that feat since.

Apparently, my seven-year-old self was awesome.

When I was a kid, my brother and I had a MD and our friend had a Master System, I remember at the time wondering why his Sonic games looked weird and were totally different to mine.
But yeah, eventually I got one of the things that let you play Master system games on MegaDrive and I got all the Sonic games for that over time. Took me forever to actually get around to finishing it though.

Yeah, I've played the game on emulation and Sonic Gems Collection. I would always get stuck on the first boss, but now I can beat him easy (Master System Version). Still, I can't get past Act 1 of Zone 2 (whatever they were called). By the way, how did you think Sonic 1 was boring. I love the Game Gear version of it (Master System version isn't quite as good) Battletoads, I understand. I've never gotten past Level 3 (NES version).

I remember the first time I brought my Game Gear to school, it was like a competition to beat Underground Zone because the boss was so unreasonably difficult.

I only found Sky High Zone difficult because I didn't know how to operate the hang glider. Once you figure that out, the game is cake till about gimmick mountain.

The 8 bit versions of Sonic 1 and 2 are awesome games! Even now I still visualize what they would look like Genesized. Chaos and Triple Trouble are great, but just a little too floaty for my tastes.

First time I played Sonic 2 GG was at a Christmas bazaar in 1993. I didn't yet have my Megadrive, but I was known throughout the school as the biggest Sonic nut. I played Underground Zone and in short, I was absolutely shite and all my friends were watching. What made this more embarrasing is that I gave the impression that I was the best Sonic player in the world. I HATED that zone with a passion, for not being able to pass act 1, and the shame it brought me. As I was expecting a Megadrive that Christmas I was dreading having to face the fiendishly difficult Underground Zone again... luckily I didn't, because unbeknownst to me, us 16 bit folk got a different game with a lovely green zone to start off with.

I played Sonic 1 GG in the summer of 95, and what can I say? the game had me at hello. I never played Sonic 2 GG again until 7 years after the bazaar, I was at a villa in Italy with 2 whole weeks to master it, I found a game gear in a junk shop with Sonic 2 and I decided that now as a seasoned player it was time to man the fuck up and face up to the game that had brought me so much shame in front of all those people. In those 2 weeks, I became very well acquainted with the game, mastered it and fell head over heels in love with it.

I would gladly pay anyone here $10k to make a good, genesized game of the first 2 8 bit games.

I don't know why people find it so difficult, I completed it with all emeralds as a child and enjoyed doing so. I never found the first boss or the glider an issue. I love the game for it's music and enviroments. Looking at it now though, it is a flawed game. There are too many areas that are dependent on memorisation.

Wow, I remember how long it took me just to beat the first boss in this game. This is the game in which I broke one of the back battery lids on my GG. I was constantly borrowing it from my cousin probably for a good 4 or 5 years until I had finally finished it and let me tell you how much of an ordeal that was. I've only beaten the game twice, once getting all of the emeralds. That's a tough one, I must say. Music was unbelievably amazing, levels were outstanding and original. The first for GG was a little better though, I think mainly because of the difficulty the second held.

Grew up with the game, and remember having so much difficulty with the first boss. I know I've defeated him, and may have even beat the game, but I don't remember. Eitherway, wasn't my favorite Sonic title -- or anywhere close. Now, Sonic Chaos? Hell yeah.

  12. I've always meant to beat all of the platforming Sonic GG titles. Never have beaten even one.

First Sonic game I've ever owned. I must have had it at least since I was five.

Do yourself a favor and play the Master System version instead. :P I like the game, but the GG version is pretty badly ported off of the SMS, if the first boss is any indication.

I've played it, but it wasn't until last year that it was on an actual Game Gear.

I was shocked to find an 8-year-old owned one, and that he was my brother's best friend. Mother of the Kani, I feel old all of a sudden....

    Staying sane.
I remeber playing it on my dad's GG when I about 2. He owned one of those special cartridges which I've never seen since which was one of those 2-in-1 games with Spinball and Sonic 2.

He also had it on the master system. Blimey he was amazing on it! Watching play on Alex Kidd and Triple Trouble. Those were the days.

I think it might be pretty obvious I'm a big fan. Grew up with the games, and the difficulty bred me to be a tough, hard as nails gamer. Chaos and Triple Trouble were cake walks in comparison, and I was a little bit disappointed in them to be honest. Same story with the 16-bit games.

Silver Sonic is the greatest sonic boss of all time. That battle was extremely epic and satisfying, the way you were both equally matched and rebounded off each other. It wasn't really about memorising patterns, it was all out warfare. And tentacle chest claw is an under-used weapon.

I grew up with the game. I can beat it, but I've never collected all emeralds. Too difficult for me. I played that secret level through level select :P
The first boss isn't that hard...but I had difficulties with that hang glider.
    It's a good little game.

Master System and Game Gear are two different entities though'. Yes, even in Europe.

Anyway, I used to play the crap out of this game, on both consoles, and can still 'perfect' it (no lives lost, all emeralds gathered) on my GG, even after all these years. It's a cool game that constantly manages to keep you on your toes....but shame it's kind of ugly and unplayable on emulators.

...I find the following stuff useful or at least interesting to know:
    - as long as you roll, you can bounce off the first boss' jaws...but try to balance on top of the jaw or you might be bounced right into those leaping balls of death. (The catch is to use that bounce to leap over the balls as opposed to walking under them; it's a much lazier way of beating that boss.)
    - tired of waiting for boss #3 to finish juggling with you? After hitting him, he will crawl toward you and attempt to jump and smack you with his tail. Jumping on him gets him to juggle you and waste precious seconds, so what you want to do is roll underneath him (he will jump over you as you pass) - once you do it, he will immediately start inflating his nose and be vulnerable. But make sure to gather some speed beforehand or you might end up stopping underneath him, resulting in death.
    - it's fun to roll right into boss #5's nose as he's ramming you.
    - Sonic is free to change direction in mid-air even after roll-jumping, like in Sonic CD. Once you start fully exploiting this, the game becomes much easier.
    - if you hold the jump button and bounce off breakable things eight times in a row, you'll do a double jump. (I think this also works on the first boss.)
    - break the speed limit and you'll be killing badniks on contact! But how do you do that? Well, somewhere in Green Hills there are two loops one right after another. Enter the first loop at full speed, but roll just before Sonic actually goes through it...Sonic will uncurl as he goes through that loop and will come out at max speed. Now enter the second loop and roll just like you did with the first - if you do it correctly, you'll notice Sonic passing the second loop much faster than the first, and once you exit the second one, the speed limit will be broken and Sonic will be invincible to badniks until he loses his pace. (In the end, it's not very useful, just fun to do.)

I totally agree on the epicness and satisfaction from that battle, it is one of my favorite Sonic bosses ever. And you really are equally matched - he's got spin dash and the extendo-arm, BUT he's also got the spin-jump lock thing and can't change direction in mid-air whilst Sonic can. It's almost like fighting a Sonic 2 MD Sonic. :P

I had a Game Gear with Sonic 1, Sonic 2, Sonic Triple Trouble, and Sonic Drift 2. But Sonic 2's first boss was ridiculously hard and I only managed to beat it twice.
