I cannot express how pumped I am to play the inevitable mods for this game.

This, right here. I'm pretty sure a handful of them will be so much closer to the classics than the real deal.

I think I can probably safely say that any modification to Sonic 4 will be an improvement. Do we even know if it's possible to change the physics, or is it too hard-wired into the game/.exe?

^ All the game data was hard coded into compiled ROMs and we found a way :P.

Anyway I have a serious question. Did they not update this at all, is this a straight port with all the bad points still there? Like, when you jump and push forward then stop, does Sonic just fall exactly when you stop pushing and no velocity physics fixed? Just curious. If it is fixed, I will buy a copy.

It's not fixed in any way.

I swapped Splash Hill 1's map files with the ones from Lost Labyrinth 3. Improvement? Or maybe you just hate Sonic and want to kill him several times over. Well you can do that too with a little file swapping. Insignificant and pointless all this may be, I've still had more fun renaming files and seeing the results than I ever did with S4 originally.

Funny no one has done this skin mod yet considering it hyped us up like crazy back then.

Well, it just released for PC yesterday and making an entire animation set is a lot more time consuming than just swapping it with the iPad graphics.

I was just talking about a texture mod :v:. but what do you mean by animation set? as in making new animations for the game?

Well, I guess saying texture swap would have worked better, but making new textures is still a lot more time consuming than just swapping it with ones from the iPad.

...

I've been putting off getting this game for consoles along with Sonic CD, because I've been trying to influence SEGA with my purchasing power, to show them that the PC has potential.

With that said, up until now, based on opinions of you guys, I've held the mentality that Sonic 4 Ep 1 is "crap."
After spending the cash to buy Sonic 4 Ep 1 for Steam and playing it, I think it's the best Sonic game I've ever played, better than Sonic 1, Sonic 2, Sonic 3, and Sonic CD.

Yesterday I've played Sonic 4 Ep 1 more than I've played Sonic CD. Sonic CD's levels are uninspired compared to Sonic 4's.

Now one of the complaints I hear against Sonic 4 Ep 1 is that the "The physics are glitchy!"
No my friend, the physics of Sonic 1 to Sonic 3 are glitchy, Sonic 4 fixed them.

You know what amazed me about Sonic 4 Ep 1?

The puzzles where Sonic had to stop and think. Like that section in the casino level where you had to time your jumps to cross the cards.

Or how about the ruin level where you had to light the torches (that go out), where one torch controls two platforms,
one platform you need to stand on, but the other blocks the path ahead. So you had to light the torch with a precise delay to allow you to jump on the platform, and have the other disappear in time for you to move on.

I also enjoyed the repeating level portions ala Super Mario Brothers, where one had to figure out how to break the infinite loop.

The use of 2D tiles was a great decision. In Sonic Generations' Classic Gameplay, due to 3D perspective, a platform next to a hill may look like this at first:
-[ ] (it looks like the platform is touching the edge of the hill)
but once the perspective changes, you see that the platform is quite some distance from the hill:
- [ ]

That was annoying in Sonic Generations, which Sonic 4 Ep 1 had solved.

The other great thing about using a 2D tile system is that it forces the map makers to make the levels connected. I'm sick of Generations' levels featuring gimmicks that prevented the player from going back.
Sure, a giant fish is chasing me, forcing me to move on to the next part of the level, but that seems ... ugh. Sonic 4 does have its gimmicks, but it's still well done, rewarding the player for exploration.

All in all, I give Sonic 4 Ep 1 the "Best Sonic Game Ever" award. It was the best money I had spent.
And it made me realize how annoying some of you are when it comes to still thinking Sonic 1/2/3/CD can't be beat. Pfft.

My only regret is not being able to write to SEGA to tell them that they've been doing a fine job with Sonic 4 all along, and how I'm disappointed that I hadn't tried playing the game earlier to tell them so.
Too bad they're going to butcher Sonic 4 Ep 2 by listening to the wrong fans.

Does the World of Darknes (Act 2) of Lost Labyrinth have a Power Sneakers monitor?

None in any obvious locations, as far as I can tell.

I tried doing what you did there for April's Fools, but it's really hard not to write about it in a positive light without slipping in a lot of "false compliments". You have really strong guts, you earned my respect.

Come back to it when the new game smell wears off. I had the same level of optimism too. Then I went back to it about a week later to dick around in time trials.
