History is fun. Google Groups is not. But blindly searching topics with a targeted date filter can be fun:

Earliest mention of Sonic Crackers on the internet I can find

And also some fun, yet kinda odd in hindsight, rumor-mill stuff:

Quote

I've heard that knuckles chaotix is called "sonic crackers" in england, and
I've also heard that sega was considering releasing KC as a regular megadrive
cart in england... all that the 32x does is draw the sprites... i guess this is
a beta version of the chaotix for megadrive..

Also some of the earliest discussions of the Sonic 2 "Beta" I can find:

First mention of "Sonic 2 Beta"

Sounds like the prototypes known, just not easily accessible yet. I guess Simon Wai hasn't hit the scene yet?

Fun thread that's part of a larger "updates" series on the Sonic 2 Beta. I may post more about if anyone's interested.

Big thing to come out of this is apparently someone by the name of "Andre Dirk" is credited with having been one of the earlier "discoverers" of the beta. Any oldbies out there able to shed some light on this?
