If Trigger produced a 1 season Sonic anime with the standarts of Gurren Lagann or Kill la Kill it might skyrocket the franchise's popularity. You might also argue that Kill la Kill is Sonic Adventure 2 without the IP.

Seeing how the average quality of the animes has gotten worse nowadays, I'm not sure if I want to see a new one about Sonic. It's a character that NEEDS good animation because of his speed and all the action that should take place, and that requires a lot of money. Seeing the technical quality of the Boom series, SEGA can't or doesn't want to spend too much. So better not starting a new anime than getting disappointed again like in X seeing Sonic like it was drawn by my dog.

And referring to Trigger, yes they have done cool works but Kill la Kill and Gurren Lagann are not the best examples of good animation... Little Witch Academia is I think their best one, but can't be taken as an example of a normal anme because it's a special with much better budget.

Returning to he plot, as somebody has already said, we all know we will see a movie about a kid with some kind of social problems that thanks to the inspiration that Sonic gave him after his short stay in the real world, he will become the leader of his classmates. HAPPY THE ENDING.

I don't want to be pesimist, but I already know I'll get disapponted on this movie. I am just curious to see in wich way they disappoint me.

The only wish I have for this movie is seeing a short cameo of Naka and Ohshima on it, like Lee on the Marvel movies. And why not, Webber too.

I don't think the average animation quality in anime has really gone down, it's just that thanks to the internet we are exposed to far more of it than we used to. There are plenty of badly animated anime in the 80s, 90s, and 00s. It's just that nobody remembers those as well as they do the well animated ones. Also, OVAs were a lot more prominent back in the 90s and those had a lot less to animate than anime with 12/13 episodes do.

You can still find incredibly well animated anime from these past few years like Mob Psycho 100, One Punch Man, Concrete Revolutio, Space Dandy, Lupin the Third Part 4 etc.

As for Trigger, yeah their Little Witch Academia films have probably been their best overall productions. Though that that's mainly because those were one-off things and not anime series (though they are making a LWA anime series that will premier early next year). I was talking more about them not because the overall quality is great (it's pretty hit or miss), but because when they do animate stuff well, their animation style would be a perfect fit for Sonic. And fwiw, Kill la Kill still has that animation style in its more well animated episodes.

Anyway, technically the Sonic movie is already being animated by an anime studio. Marza Animation Planet is Japanese, after all. :v:

Closest we got to animation in a similar style to Trigger of Sonic was the Sonic Riders intro by Production I.G.

Ok, Naka, Ohshima and Webber look at the camera and say "Way past cool"....

Realistically, an Anime movie would have too small of an audience for the effort. A hybrid movie is likely to be shit and will reinforce en masse the same negative opinions about the series, that Sonic is a dirty little money grubbing sellout whore. Sega should be working their asses off to counter this narrative, but as usual with every step forward they take two steps back.

A full CGI would be the best option. But hey, a hybrid could potentially work if it doesn't end up being the same cliché as per usual. And I'm really looking forward to seeing Jack Black as Robotnik too!

I think Sonic Riders would've made a pretty cool futuristic spinoff TV show, especially with an intro like that. The Zero Gravity intro theme, Un-Gravitify, kicks ass too.

I don't want to annoy much more with the offtopic, but I can't agree with you. You are not completely wrong, but I still think nowadays it's harder to find a well animated production than before. At least for me.

And thinking seriously on the plot. How would you make an hybrid movie about Sonic, trying to make it good, and not ending being the usual child movie? I can't think on anything without getting disappointed. xD

Well I guess there are all sorts of ways to go about making the movie. I'm sure most of the live-action movies that Sony is producing today are blended with CGI, so there are infinite ways of creating the story without the typical ‘“What's that son?” “ahh?, our class pet, Mr. Needlemouse…” “Mr. Needlemouse?”, “Ya, he's a hamster…” “weird looking hamster, son”’ .

So, like one example would be the original Ninja Turtle movies, they could go a pg-13 route like that with CGI. It doesn't need to be the Hedgehog-meets-boy, story. Thing is, I can imagine a live action movie with Sonic blending in well, but Robotnik… Is he going to be played by a real man? Or is he going to be some grotesque absurdity, like same figure, but hyper realistic, or even more disgusting, Danny Davito?

Actually… That could be fucking awesome. Like OK, I got it now. Here is my quick pitch for an amazing movie..

Massive energy spikes are being detected at Robotropolis, so Sonic speeds over there and discovers a portal to another Zone. Somehow he gets sucked in and lands in our world, in front of a giant billboard to elect Robotnik for mayor or president, or Egg Co., or whatever. The city is less like the real world, and more like Gotham City from Batman Forever. At this point you can tell any cliché story and it'll be cool enough that it won't matter.

    Just please no Smurf copycat!

To be fair, I don't think we should get hung up on the meme of expecting a bad, cliched kids' movie, as if any fantasy movie about a kid with a magic friend is gonna suck ass. For all we know it might not be a kid. It might be a 90s throwback with a teenager trying to be the stereotypical cool kid, bashing Nintendo and rocking a high score at Sonic 1 until some high school science experiment goes wrong and now Sonic and Tails are real life.

Or it could be a more horrifying variation on that premise: + - the cool kid and his geeky friend get turned into Sonic and Tails due to said science experiment gone wrong, and their science teacher becomes Robotnik. Their class gets turned into chibi animals.

    1. Studio Trigger didn't do Gurren Lagann, that was Studio Gainax (where admittedly a significant crop of Trigger's staff originated from).

    2. Saying GL and KLK don't have amazing animation is one thing, but you're actually claiming the animation in both series isn't good? Are you serious?

I couldn't help myself... Danny DeVito as Dr. Ivo Robotnik.

If you're going to talk about Danny DeVito as Robotnik, at least post the meme:

So it goes from a studio that's notorious for being creatively bankrupt to a studio that's notorious for its recent films being financial bankrupts:

    Code (Text):
    1. FILM            DOM GROSS   BUDGET
    2. Transformers 5      $130M       $217M
    3. Baywatch        $58M        $69M
    4. XXX 3           $45M        $85M
    5. Ghost in the Shell  $41M        $110M
    6. Monster Trucks      $33M        $125M
    7. Rings           $28M        $25M
    8. Mother!         $20M (est)  $30M
    9. TOTAL           $355M       $661M
    10.
    11.
    12. Wonder Woman        $411M       $150M
    Funny how that works.

(Also lol at it still being live-action/CG.)

Haha if this movie ever comes out it is going to be such a trainwreck. Any movie that takes this long to come together doesn't have much of a chance.

Also have they done casting calls yet? I want to see if I can be my OC.

Mad Maxx Fury Road would like to have a word with you.

That said, wasn't the next Sonic game suppose to tie in with the movie at one point?

I fully expect the Sonic movie to suck, but a movie taking long to come together really isn't much of an indication of its quality.

Never heard that, though I'm sure there have been at least a couple of false 4chan rumors that have said so.
