Retropolis also does a fantastic review series which is on par with Matthewmatosis in depth analysis so if you like those style of reviews it's worth your time to check them out.

Thanks for reminding me Retropolis exists. I think the last video I watch from him was Mickey Mania.

Thanks for the video. It was a breath of fresh air seeing a honest indepth review instead of yet another armchair gamedev attempt to "fix" Sonic

That was a great watch, it's probably the best and most in-depth review of Sonic 1 I've ever seen. And I fully agree with all the things he has said throughout from the how great Green Hill, Star Light and Spring Yard (to some extent) mixes speed, platforming and a good amount of exploration amazingly well to the rings being a nice mechanic but doesn't really fix the sloppy aspects of the levels and especially doesn't help when you need 50 Rings to get to the Special Stages that really don't clarify what it even going on and so much more.

It's kinda amazing how it took this long for someone to finally get into the nitty-gritty truth about the original title after several articles talking about how Sonic was "never good" to begin with.

It's such a great feeling, man!
