Not everyone liked Sonic Chronicles, but I certainly did. Anyway, in the course of the game one could collect chao as equippable items for use in battle. There were 40 different types that could be found in the game, from Barbo to Zimba, and each of them did something different (and usually useless) to your stats.

There were at times tantalising rumors around the Intarwebz that there were actually 44 chao, not 40 - the extra 4 being, in true rip-off-Pokemon manner, ones that could only be obtained from IRL events. Supposedly, these were "viral" chao; trading left the original chao AND generated a new one on the partner's cart.

For whatever reason (poor event organization, the fact that no Chronicles players have any friends), these chao were never really seen, nor did they progress much beyond a shady rumour like some sort of vastly-less-popular SS Anne truck Mew...

    ...until now?

Crude efforts with Google Translate evoke:

Anyone more versed in Eastern moonspeak able to figure out if this is some cheat code for getting the extra chao? And if so, is it applicable to Western versions of TDB?

    EDIT: 'cos I can't spell

I tried entering the codes inside the Chao Garden on a US cart, and nothing happened.

What I'm parsing from the engrish is that you enter those button codes in when you enter the Chao Garden and it gives you those Chao. I'm nowhere near skilled enough to translate the Japanese on the codes card. Entirely possible that the codes are JP only though - does Bioware have an official forum this question might stand a chance of getting an answer on?

For the record, there was one viral Chao released in the US. They had a launch party 2 days before release at the Nintendo store where a viral Chao was given away. However, the event was a complete and utter bomb- people at SSMB said the place was practically deserted. I'm assuming that that's the reason that no more have ever been released and one of the reasons why the chances of future installments in the series look rather bleak.

Gathering information on Sega World Sydney and collecting Sonic merchandise.
Hmmm, the game's strategy guide says "Even if you diligently collected all the Chao Eggs and traded with your friends, there are still an exclusive final five. These secret Chao will be released on a later date. Keep checking the website for updates, community support and events or shows that will divulge the secret to obtaining these five Chao!" These secret Chao are supposedly named Pooki, Farfinkle, Baki, Stugs, and Fimbley. Stugs was given out at the Nintendo World Store event, so the ones on the Japanese website must be the remaining 4.

Or that anyone with half a working brain/that isn't a BioWare apologist wouldn't buy/pirate the crap out of this train wreck of a title.

If these chao are unlock keys, I'm surprised they haven't been hacked out yet.

I thought they would perhaps be available through action replay but I've looked on the codejunkies website and found nothing. You could request a code though.

Didn't know about that. Maybe that's all the artists had to work with, since they didn't look like that in the game, at least as far as I remember (except Gamma).

If I recall, that picture is pretty close to the other E-100's, though it's been a while. You may be thinking of E-101 Beta V.2.

Saves are compatible between English and Japanese versions. So, unlocking them in Invaders also unlocks them in Dark Brotherhood. All what you have to do is just to rename save.
If you need, here is the NO$GBA save with them already unlocked.

But http://sonic.sega.jp/SonicChronicles/chao/...ret_p_img01.gif will give us 404. Looks like there should be a cheat that unlocks the first chao.

    Just Farfinkle we're missing, then.

It seems that interest in Sonic Chronicles has picked up. Perhaps this was SEGA's plan all along.

I've got an r4i (digital backups for the win), so I used a cheat to unlock all five of them. Farfinkle is described as follows:

Farfinkle, along with Pooki and Baki, appear to have text that goes on past the limit. Normally the QA would have noticed this, but presumably they never got them. Upon realizing this (along with the poor grammar of Fimbley's description) they might have decided to scrap the idea.

    ORLY?

That's cool to know. Are you able to screencap Farfinkle? Being a completionist, I'm wanting to add him to the Chronicles chao wiki list. ;)

If I can reverse engineer the AR code from the r4i database, yes. If not, I can ask that kid down the street to let me use my DSi to photograph Farfinkle on his DS using my flash cart. I think the former has a better chance of working, honestly.

P.S. Anyone interested in trying to find out how the text is stored in Sonic Chronicles?

EDIT: Until my sister gets back from the doctor, I'm getting out the hex editor and trying to find the uncompressed text. There probably is no uncompressed text, but I'm having no luck with the cheat database editor or any of the cheats I found on the net.

Can we rename this topic to those 5 Secret Chao? Anyway, sorry for the double post, but I had a huge success with finding the text in the ROM. All I had to do was break the highly complex compression format.

Here are the descriptions for the Chao:

    Baki:
Bonded character making a successful counter move will automatically get free attacks against the enemy. (Wiki guess: enemy)

    Farfinkle:
Bonded character automatically inflicts a random status effect on enemy when making a normal attack. (Wiki guess: move)

    Fimbley:
Bonded character will automatically be missed some basic attacks each round. (Wiki had it right.)

    Pooki:
Bonded character takes less damage from enemy attacks and spreads the remaining damage evenly among other team members. (Wiki didn't guess.)

    Stugs:
Bonded character is avoided by enemy attacks except as last surviving target. (Wiki had it right.)

EDIT: I got Farfinkle's pic. I took it with an emulator, though, so there's ugly lines. Hey, NeKit, how did you get that good quality picture? I can upload a savestate with Farfinkle if you'll take a picture of him without the dumb lines.

EDIT2: Frozen Nitrogen, I have something that'll make your completionist very happy: I'm also added Zousar. The category I made so that you could have a picture whenever you click a chao's name now says 45, so that means we're done with the list.

Can someone add pictures of Perty, Kayla, Joy, Hayda, Chise, Fess, Ferox, Dusty, and Bobo? I apparently never got those Chao. Use the format TDBFarfinkle.png as far as naming goes, replacing Farfinkle with the name of the chao. The pages are already set up and formatted

EDIT3: I've reformatted the pages again. They now contain the rarity and description of all the chao, and the pictures of most of them. I've spent about 5 hours on this. Anyone want to fix them up some more? Be my guest. But I've got a headache now, and I'm done touching the chao pages. I put in a nice little template for the chao pages, so all you have to enter is the rarity, description, and the color, and the template does the rest for you (and I put in overrides because Cream's page is "Cream (TDB)", so overrides were needed. Also, there's now a navbox for the chao. I had next to no edits (if any) before this stuff, and now I have 185.)

Now to look into the ROM some more. Also, I'd just like to note that this is Spartoi.
