Somebody lock this. I'm doing a large behind-the-scenes overhaul, and I don't need dumbfucks screaming WHERE IS HACK at me during this.

I love how when you go to fast and hit a wall you get bounced back.

The purple in labyrinth zone it a little harsh.

I like how you upped Sonic's speed in this and that he has the spin dash.

I can't wait to see the finished product.

Which program are you using to hack this?

What programs would be a better question.

Considering he ported the ARZ background (damn, I should have done it before - too late now :( ), I think he is using SonED2.

And a ASM/Text editor, of course.

BTW, I am playing it on GENS 1.1 and it works fine. I just didn't feel like downloading another emu at the time so I tried it and it seems fine.

The title screen music doesn't play in Gens.

I've decided on and implemented a second character. However, while the code works, I'm none too skilled at art. Art is underway, but it'll be an ugly modification of Sonic's art.

Anybody have MD-ready art for Ray the Flying Squirrel laying around?

I can send you a build with the character's code working, if desired.

    Hacking contest build is out!

First, a screenshot of each Act in the rotation.

    Dusk Drive Act 1

    Dusk Drive Act 2

    Rust Realm Act 1

    Septic Slide Act 1

    Grand Gardens Act 1

And, something that ISN'T in the rotation, but will be quite exciting:

That's right, it's Clockwork Castle. Similar to Paradise Palace, the art is preexisting, for the most part, but is turned into a completely different theme.

Next, a quote from the Readme.

    Code (Text):

    9. Disclaimer:
    10.
    11. By pressing Start, you can access all levels that are in a reasonably finished state. The order is:
    12.
    13. Dusk Drive 1
    14. Dusk Drive 2
    15. Rust Realm 1
    16. Septic Slide 1
    17. Grand Gardens 1
    18.
    19. Sonic's code is relatively complete and bug-free. Ray's is not, though, and his art is almost nonexistant.
    20.
    21. Levels not on this list, or Ray, are not finished. Do not complain about their level of completion, or upload videos/screenshots.
    22.
    23. All music is placeholder, ported from Sonic 2 by Irixion using ESEII.
    24.
    25. This is not a stable build. However, it has little to no game-breaking bugs within finished levels.
    26.
    27. Low-Grav Shield/Anti-Sonic:
    28. During play, two new monitors will be encountered. They are:
    29.
    30. Low-Grav Shield: A red shield. It increases jump height while active.
    31. Anti-Sonic: Removes one life.
    32.
    33. Controls:
    34.
    35. Title Screen:
    36.
    37. Start+A: Level Select
    38. Start: Begin
    39. B: Play As Sonic (if not already Sonic)
    40. C: Play As Ray (if not already Ray)
    41.
    42. Shared:
    43.
    44. Start: Pause
    45. A: Jump
    46. Down+C: Spin Dash
    47. <-/->: Walk/Run
    48. Up: Look Up
    49. Down: Duck
    50. Down (while moving): Roll
    51.
    52. Sonic:
    53.
    54. A in midair: Static Curl
    55.
    56. Ray:
    57.
    58. A in midair: Burst Warp- Upwards
    59. A+Left: Burst Warp- Left
    60. A+Right: Burst Warp- Right
    And, finally, a download.

Is the music meant to play that slowly? The entire game actually seemed a little sluggish, but that may have been a psychological effect caused by the slow music! Also, I find the wall recoil annoying and unnecessary. They removed it from Sonic 2 for a reason!

Those are my only two real negatives, though. As you mentioned, it's buggy in places, but the level design was on the whole pretty good and I played through and enjoyed all of the levels without switching it off in disgust, which is rare for a hack at this stage in development and a major plus point. With better music and a bit more polish on the art I think you may have something here.

2 things that are hindering me from enjoying this game from the get go.

    1) Why is it set to run at 50hz as standard? I had to force the emulator to run it at 60hz, which was annoying.
    2) I'm also not a fan of "A button does almost everything". I know this might be a personal preference thing, but I enjoyed the ease of use of the original where any button would make you jump. I'm ok with other moves being mapped to one button, but when you move the main attack/jump button to A and the others don't seem to do much, it just seems a bit awkward. And after playing for a while I still found myself pressing B or C to jump, only to realise they did nothing.

That said, I do like the art changes, if slightly simplistic and the layout is solid enough, just a few oddly placed objects here and there.

  14. The music has some faults, it seems. And I'm not too amazed of the art either :S

Sorry, but I couldn't enjoy it, the controls are confusing as hell.. Oh and nice job at not giving the level select code.

Excuse me? Alot of people use A because it's the first fucking button. Why would you NOT use A?

  16. Actually thers a reason. if you look at a genesis controller, it looks like this.

C is more convenient if you don't want to move your thumb all the way to the a button all the time

    I've always used A. o_O
    And surely that wouldn't matter with a keyboard when the buttons are A S D or Z X C.

Controls are the way they are because I'm a Nintenfag. Quit whining; they'll be customizable in the final.

Oerg, the level select is on by default.

It should not be in 50Hz. Keep forcing it as a temp fix, but I'll put out an emergency fix soon, assuming the problem is't the emu. What are you running?

EDIT: It isn't 50Hz for me. Check your settings.

EDIT2: Using Gens? There's the problem. Use Fusion, Regen, or a flashcart. I'd guess ColinC10 uses Gens, too.

Also... how did Ray's teleport work?

"I got stuck in a wall" is a given, if you're playing with it.

    OTHER than that, though?

I'm used to using B and C from playing games like Golden Axe. But A is easy enough to adapt to for now, I guess.

  20. K. Played it.

Played the recommended zones. They are all decently designed, and the powerups are cool. I like how running for long periods of time build up speed. Not a bad hack by any means.

    Controls:
    A = Jump
    A+A = Jump Cancel
    C = Spindash
Run for a long time to gain speed. SERIOUS SPEED.

    Definitely some issue though:

When you end an act with Sonic and switch directions at the end, you get stuck walking to the right.

I also tried some "other" levels. Dusk Drive Act 3 is completable, but it then goes back to Act 2 when beaten. Found some Toxic Ruins, and a complete Last Zone Act 3 (named Zone Zone) along with "Rust Ruins Act 3" which had the Final Boss. It is definitely harder, so Congratz on that. I beat it, the ending sequence played in the Zone, then the game crashed.

Also, Level select is hold A, Press Start.

Soft resets in Kega DO NOT WORK. Goes to a SEGA screen then stays there.
Going back to the title for any reason while still in-game (like dying for instance), brings up a garbled title screen.
