Best and most "original like" Emerald hill zone track is Scuba Steve's Emerald hill.

    About mystic cave zone.
Check those Mystic mansion instruments from sonic heroes.

When you listen FM Channel 3.
They are bells. If someone can replace Fm c3 whit.
    bells, like mystic mansoin.
Also Fm channel 1 have "Whistle like instrument"
If you listen Mystic mansoin whistle, it's kind of same, but HD.

With the tech demo just over the horizon now, has any thought been given to which piece, if any, will be used in it? Since there's been so little information released about it, it's hard to tell. Even in their WIP states, there have been a few very decent remasterings that could be used in it I believe.

Listen to sounds #3D, #4F or #6A and you'll notice there's some serious problems with whatever emulator you used to rip those...

scubeSteve will hopefully have his remastered Title screen ready in time for the tech demo. He may also improve upon his Emerald Hill in time.

Are you sure? I compared those sounds repeatedly in Kega Fusion just now and couldn't hear a difference.

Do you have Super HQ turned on?

But anyway, if you're used to the real hardware you'll notice what I mean right off the bat.

I didn't have it turned on. I turned it on in Kega, checked it again and you are right, there is definitely a big difference.

Is it just these three sounds IceKnight, or does it occur with others as well?

I'm not sure, but if those serve as an example, then I guess there might be more inaccuracies in those rips (as small as they might be).

The ideal thing to do would be to rip them directly from a first model Genesis (or Japanese MegaDrive) system, without forgetting about the alternate sounds you sometimes get when playing them more than once (spindash revving up, sounds that keep looping as long as they're being called, etc).

Here's what I think the soundtrack should look like.

NOTE: All of the remasterings were great, but some, in my opinion, captured the emotion of the stage better than others. This is in no way meant to offend the artists or their works.

I'll list them by stage name then artist who's remastering I liked the most.

Title Screen - Blue Streak (advice; Try to use a louder instrument for the melody; the current one sounds kind of shallow and not "presenting enough". Possibly a louder horn)

    Emerald Hill - Scubasteve

    Emerald Hill 2P - Cinossu

    Chemical Plant - BlazeHedgehog

    Aquatic Ruin - BlazeHedgehog

    Casino Night - Cinossu

Casnio Night 2P - Cinossu (Speed it up the the original's speed.)

    Hill Top - BlazeHedgehog

    Mystic Cave - Cinossu

    Mystic Cave 2P - Tweaker

Hidden Palace - BlazeHedgehog (If you could find a way to incorporate Malevolence's slow violin intro into your intro, with a transition that speeds it up to yours, it would be perfect.)

    Oil Ocean - Cinossu

    Metropolis - S2fan & Tweaker

Sky Chase - Blast Processing (please get rid of those sax notes that get sustained into the pan-flute notes)

    Wing Fortress - Scubasteve

    Death Egg - Blast Processing

    Final Boss - Tweaker

There you go. Sorry to those who I didn't choose, your piece were still amazing.

We should have a poll of some sort for all of this.

I have listened all of music, what are made so far.
Chimpo, I agree with you. I have collected all same songs.

Scuba made most original music. I still think, that mystic cave need those instruments, what I said before.

Isn't this partially the reason why he was chosen to be the overall music coordinator?

At first blush I'd agree with the vote system, but this could very well be one of the cases where decision by committee isn't the best solution. At least there's a fairly good concensus for which pieces are the most appropriate for the majority of the zones.

The biggest remaining concern on the music side of things is the same one that's been tossed around for awhile now - getting the tracks to sound correct when sped up.

So you guys agree with the comments I have about revising some of the songs on the list I made?

    You're absolutely right, thanks! :(

I will re-record all the sounds eventually but unfortunately I won't have some spare time to do it within the next two weeks or so. :v:

The repeating sounds like the spindash have to be simulated in the game's code.

Just a thought (and if it's already been brought up and shot down, I apologize in advance) but would you guys consider rearrangements, like the Brawl version of Angel Island Zone, to be a decent idea for this project? By this I mean replacing some of the original YM-chip elements with real instruments; I could certainly do this for a few songs with my jam group in college.

As long as it doesn't stray too far from the original ambience. It should retain the original essential melody. Here's our official guideline:

All remastered music should transcribe the originally intended instruments and overall style, whilst updating them to today's musical standards. Obviously style can be enhanced by adding some more detailed notes, good instrument sets, stereo panning and velocity changes, as well as overdubs or complete drum kits and loops. The tempo and notes themselves should remain mostly untouched, but of course, new notes are also welcomed to avoid shallow sounds. In order to capture the ambience that Sonic Team originally intended, we prefer remastered music than remixed music. Here is an example from one of our top music contributors. The original genesis tune plays first, followed by its remastered counterpart: Click here to download!

So, is nobody willing to record the Sonic 2 SFX from real hardware? I would capture some, but they play a bit slower in PAL machines, so those are a no go.
