Presumably to have knuckles on the screen they have to steal some of the colours from the rings' palette for knux's colours. Only 64 colours can be loaded at once.

 

I Think that those rings were Probably Special Rings that were cut from the game and do not Apear in the Game. You see they were Probably Special rings for Knuckles!!!!

SUper Sonic is Yellow (like Sunshine get it? my user name hahaha) and Super Knux is Red!
So the red Ringss MUST be Special ring only for Knux.

Maybe they would take him to a Special stage but I haveno Proof. ={
